Dear Government of India, no one is interested to buy 3rd class sticker-rebranded products sold by lava or Micromax found in platforms of China instead of proper R&D budget phones offered by realme or Xiaomi.

it is only the beginning imagine a ban on sub 300$ phones

The "local" "manufacturers" doesn't really manufacture anything. They just rebrand a random chinese phone and slap a huge markup so thay doesn't deserve any empathy

AnonD-1060663, 09 Aug 2022What you think it does not matter to us. We only know that ... more"Local manufacturers" who simply slap their company logos on Chinese ODM-produced phones? Give them an unfair competitive advantage because they can't compete with foreign brands in terms of quality or marketing? That's pretty pathetic and low, not gonna lie.

As much as I don't like to bringing politics to technology related topic and I not fond of the current Chinese regime (Even though I am Chinese myself, (Not from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau). To some extend I would agreed on sanctions a company IF they did some mistake. For example, ZTE? They asking for it. Huawei? A little bit stretch and partial victim to the political conflict and some element of security risk from CCP and also business risk to western company 5G business, at least there IS a reason for the sanctions. But outright banning other country company to sell certain priced device to boost the local company sell is not going to benefit the people of India, especially most of the Indian company are selling rebranded Chinese phone with lower quality and performance, and maybe overprice as well. Not only this will scare off foreign investor but the people is limited to their choice as well. But combating the CCP they are almost becoming them as well.

In the end, Indian brands like Lava and Micromax are still using Chinese parts and this ban is just a knee jerk action to gain support among naive nationalists.

AnonD-1060663, 09 Aug 2022At that time they didn’t get enough chance. That is why we ... moreAt that time? Micromax had 22 years... oh come on. They are older than Oppo, Realme, Xiaomi, Vivo and most others. They even had a sub brand called "YU" that failed. I own and have used a Yu Yutopia which was their flagship from that brand, pretty much perfect hardware, but the software killed it, it has a fatal issue, which is solvable yes, but most people just sent the phone back.. with no software upgrades it couldn't compete and it still can't.

So let's say your buy more for the iPhone it is also from China. Unless your country can make phone with whole line.

I don't like this move. As someone put it eloquently here, if India wants their brands to sell better, make better phones. It's not that complicated. Sure, it's easier for the Chinese brands because they build millions of phones that look the same but just changing the internals for lower costs, but the government should help Lava and MicroMax with funding if they really want the local brands to bolster.

Shoot, I've always wanted to make a smartphone funded by campaigns with absolute vanilla Android with the ability to easily switch to / e / Foundation, GrapheneOS, or Lineage at the startup but my research couldn't even get me a quote from any manufacturer to help me out.

Using racist policies to boost certain companies or manufacturers is ridiculous. Competition pushes innovation and quality. Oh, and miss me with the pseudo-philosophical "oil your machine" stuff. The rich will keep buying their iPhones and Galaxy S-whatevers, you'll be left buying e-waste rebranded as "Indian".

AnonD-1060663, 09 Aug 2022And who told you put a comment about a subject which you do... moreThere's not much to "know" about this matter. Local companies are struggling because their products are considerably inferiour to those from other countries, so the government is trying to give those local companies an unfair advantage by banning their rivals from selling cheap phones, in order to (hopefully) boost their sales and people will have a more nationalistic mindset.

Think of it this way - imagine what would happen if the Japanese government banned low-end phone sales of Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo to give Sony and Sharp more breathing room in the smartphone market. Now that would be an outright crazy thing to do, don't you think?
