It's no better than other hardened glasses from other manufacturers. It just costs more, which you end up paying for when buying the phone.

I dropped my Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra from my jeans pocket onto asphalt, a drop of around 1 meter, maybe a little more. The phone landed flat on the screen and there was some gravel on the asphalt. I had a thin, nanoglass screen protector on.

When I picked it up, the entire screen was shattered and it had a huge hole in the top right corner. Completely unusable. Replacing the screen cost me 500€.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra uses Gorilla Glass Victus. It's the most overrated technology I have ever had the displeasure of coming into contact with. So cool sounding name, so much hype, so many promises and then I drop my phone once and it does absolutely nothing, except shatter like any other glass in the world.

QR code is much easier to be used to spy on phones.

Anonymous, 14 Aug 2022How do you know that newer versions are more fragile? It’s ... moreEasily. If you want to make something hard to scratch, it would be less flexible and less resistant to breaking in case of crash.
And second of all, Corning admitted that themselves.

People talking about GG vs screen protectors as if they don't know that even the slightest scratches on the screen will drastically lower the resale value of their phone. Way I see it, the more insurance the better. Phone manufacturers sure have a vested interest in screens breaking but whoever makes a much more durable screen will market the sh*t out of it.

SShock, 14 Aug 2022You all write about shattered displays like you all shatter... morePretty much every time I upgraded my phone was because of a shattered display - with the exception of my Poco F1.

I have had plastic displays from back in the day, from my old Ericson's, to my N-95.

As for screen protectors, I've never had any peeling or dirt getting under them because I apply them carefully, or I just ask a phone store to apply them for me.

Some people have blue collar jobs or lead active lifestyles and screens get more punishment accordingly.

I lost my Meizu M2 Note to my dog bolting after a cat while I was holding his leash and my phone in the same hand, and it went flying.

Screens get smashed in a million ways.

In past phones easily culd last 10 years if lifespan even 20. Saw at my stores several 3310 nokias in perfect condition where customer trying to get new battery but the phone was in a brand new condition even after 20 yearrs of use.
Nowdays even 1500 eur foldables or 1000+ flagships barely last 2-3 years and then you had to replace your device.
Companies stoped caring about real lifespan and durability they only making to sell to earn more profit and to make more and sell more.
Greed is a sin and it fuels whole civilizations since invention of money and shiny stones such as gold or diamonds,

phones of decades ago were much better than phones now in many aspects.
                          Like with everything.
In past durability and lifetime or lifespan was the most pointed or used thing to go with.
Nowdays everybody is obsessed with money. Products even most flagships for 1000+ euros last barely 2-3 years and then customers are forced to buy new phone. Same thing is happening with everything else.

Victus scratches way more than previous versions which is quite sad to see... I'd rather stick to GG5 or whichever version it was before Victus as I've never cracked my phone screen, barely drop any in my life. Hopefully they improve Victus soon

aReefer, 14 Aug 2022I care way more about glass being shatterproof than scratch... moreYou all write about shattered displays like you all shatter them 55 times every week. In 12 years, I haven't cracked a single display. If I crack one now, I'll just buy a new phone as I "saved up" on all the displays in these 12 years. There is now way I'll ever bother again with useless display protectors that always peel off on one edge, get air and dust underneath and then just look horrible. Not to mention they are terrible and ugly on phones with curved displays and always introduce an edge where dust collects like crazy. It seems none of you have lived with phones when they still had plastic displays and how horrible they were. But hey, they never ever shattered. Yay.

Rugged models has existed as long as mobiles has been mainstream. The first rugged Motorola was released way back in 1987, for instance.

I care way more about glass being shatterproof than scratchproof.

I can always replace the screen protector with a new 9H one (I use Nilkin, which are pretty expensive, but worth it for durability, optical clarity, tactile touch experience and they use good optical and oilophobic coatings).

Truth is, the phone companies have a conflict of interest in these things. The more screens we smash, the more new phones we buy.

They want to focus on "scratch resistance", but few people replace their phones over a few scratches. A shattered screen will have you whipping out your credit card very quickly though, and when GG smashes, it *really* smashes usually - not just cracks.

Gorilla glass is just evolution of tempered glass. Biggest change was shift from soft plastic displays found on phones like feature phones in early 2000's and first touch Nokia phones that used resistive displays (you had to physically bend it to register touch with a stronger press of a finger or stylus). Those displays scratched so fast it was ridiculous. Which is why I don't understand all the whining people do about "glass can break". What do you prefer, display all scratched up from most mundane soft objects or potential possible maybe crack from a very rare drop? Those of us who had phones from era of plastic displays would never ever go back to plastic displays. In last 12 years of using smartphones, I haven't cracked a single piece of glass on any of my phones. I've had plenty of them scratched and that was on glass. If it was plastic, they'd be 100 times worse. Glass is awesome. It's premium feeling, finger glides better on it and it's so much more scratch resistant. My iPhone has tons of micro scratches, but they'd be mega scratches on plastic display, so I'm totally fine with it.
