Anonymous, 23 Aug 2022Trusted source or your story is bogus. It's called gamma tracking and it corresponds to color shift against brightness. Pentile OLEDs (AMOLED) are very poor displays in terms of features and performance compared to TV panels but they are super cheap to make. AMOLED has a sweet spot when it comes to color representation and any deviation from that introduces shifts especially in saturation. That's why color accurate modes are always dimmer than super bright modes.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2022Could you please try to use facts and logic next time? ... moreFirst of all it doesn't work like that, you are throwing numbers left and right. There is Sustainable brightness aka manual slider brightness that can go on as long as there is battery and then there is Automatic brightness aka light sensor triggering super bright values for the screen and these are time limited in order not to generate too much heat and kill the display.

                      1. Sony Xperia 1 IV and Huawei P50 have the most sustainable brightness amongst all Android phones at tad bit over 600 nits. Only S22 Ultra in Extra Bright mode has more nits but other wise 1 IV beats S22 Ultra in default mode by over 200 nits.

                      2. Sony Xperia 1 IV can do 1200 nits across the whole white screen but it's super brightness is triggered by an app. Google Photos does that for example. But that's useless anyway.

                      3. Your phone's display when sitting outside on bright sunny day doesn't shoot up to 1000 nits or 1200 nits. Nope. It doesn't. Outside Auto brightness is anywhere between 600-800 nits depending on the model.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2022Not to mention the color accuracy differences they are refe... moreActually they are not tiny at all. In order for a phone to boost to 1000 nits it needs to be in Vivid Mode or supersaturation mode. In every other mode peak brightness goes up to 500. This is what people don't keep in mind at all. That includes Samsungs too.

Heck, I was just in New Orleans on vacation and I can only name once when I was on LTE instead of 5G and the coverage was bountiful.

I know you posted sources but I own the phone and have a good amount of 5G coverage out here. Could it be better by adding n25 and all 3 mmWave bands? Of course but I'm doing just fine with VoLTE on T-Mobile right now.

Who is this "target audience" you're talking about? Cause I'm pretty sure the "target audience" you thought about never considered Sony's smartphone to begin with.

Only ... moreNotebookcheck's display measurements suggest all high end phones released this year and last year from major phone brands have more color accurate display than Xperia 1 III (IV not yet tested). I went through every single one of them from Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo and I could not find a single model that does just as bad as Xperia in terms of calibration.

Sony really just uses a pixel dense display for marketing and it does not deliver great real world experience. What you get is a dim, poorly calibrated display that does not meet the requirement of its target audience. Sad!
