Rumors point to a November launch.

they really should wait for the gen 2 chipset. I dont understand why their marketing department and development crew dont know this. a product that claims to be PRO at that price point should have the very newest chipset.

Anonymous, 08 Sep 2022I'll take this rumour with a pinch of salt. It's ... moreYou might have a point there. Trying to put 20fps focusing system on a Quad Bayer sensor might be impossible. Maybe Sony will resort to the oversampling technique like what Nokia/Microsoft did before with Lumia PureView phones, but that's just my guess.

AnonD-546724, 08 Sep 2022Why isn't Sony using their own ground-breaking IMX989 ... moreIirc, that sensor is commissioned exclusively by Xiaomi. So I don't think even Sony themselves will use it. I might be wrong though.

Tho sony lag behind... moreIt's crazy to think that Sony did remove the headphone jack before with their 2018 and 2019 flagships. Sony could have just continued doing it with the 2020 Xperia 1 Mk2, but they didn't. That is why I'm only looking at either Sony or ASUS since LG exited the smartphone market. Headphone jack is still relevant in 2022 and it always will be beyond it.

Gauron, 08 Sep 2022Sony how about using the whole sensor this time instead of ... moreThree options for that

                    1) much wider FOV like Sharp (19mm)
                    2) cam bump almost as thick as phone itself like Xiaomi and Panasonic (5-6mm)
                    3) ordering curved sensor to reduce module thickness.

                    - First is bad choice when you already have another cam for super wide lens.
                    - Second , very against their taste. They even sacrifice cooling for aesthetics.
                    - Third , Sony Electronics would never pay the price Sony Semicon would charge since Semicon is "independent" and treats Sony Electronics as any other clients like Nikon, Fuji, Apple, Oppo etc ..

Probably reduced battery and thicker body like Pro(2020), if the phone really has this cam setup. No way this phone has same 5000mAh + this cam system inside same body of pro-i.

Anonymous, 08 Sep 2022They should delay their true flagship for 3 months and use ... moreThe idea is to sell as many pro-i possible before next 1 is for sale.
This is why the 1iv was announced in late May instead of february.

Also, we are just 2 months away from its announcement. They are not going to pause the project, start all over again just to trade SoC.

Since sony does not order as much chips as other brands like samsung, there is ZERO chance they can receive chips enough before april to make the phones.
Who orders more pieces, gets the priority from suppliers ..
Guess why the phones are always sold in mid/late Q2 (april-jun)

In the end, with all the degrading of Sony's devices and services in last years, you gotta give it to them, they have their way and won't be deviated from it. One Pro and a 1, 5 and 10 every year, no notch or punch holes in the display, same display ratio, same high prices. I believe they no longer make profit from their mobile division and use it as marketing purpose only. Well, the Pro series for sure anyway. But, overall, to be appreciated that Sony won't let go to it's identity and go with the rest.

If they are going to use 1", 1/1.3" and an 1/1.7" sensor, this has the potential to be the first really versatile cameraphone.
The achilles-heel of smartphone cameras so far has been that they usually offered one good main sensor (mostly coupled with a 24mm-26mm lens). accompanied by much smaller UWA and short tele modules. The current tele sensor used in the Xperia 1 iv is 1/3.5", which makes it virtually impossible to capture enough light in difficult lighting conditions.

Meanwhile the Xperia 1 IV is still not available with a US ROM. Sony keeps pushing back the release date. First it was sept 1st, then it was sept 22-23rd, now it's October 27-28th.

Sony knows that a 48mp RGB sensor is better than a 48mp quad bayer one. I think they make video camera where 6k is downsampled to 4k or 1080p which has better quality than a normal 4k or 1080p. This cannot be achieved with quad bayer sensor which is only good for marketing.
Hopefully, Sony will focus on professional quality rather than marketing by using 48mp RGB downsampled to 12mp instead of 48mp quad bayer and thus revive PureView!

They should delay their true flagship for 3 months and use next gen QC chip instead.
