iPhone 14 Pro Max with A16 chipset appears on Geekbench with minimal performance improvement

08 September 2022
It looks like the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are not missing out on much.

No they used the A13 because they said it‘s what the competition is currently trying to catch up to

RealLifePhones, 08 Sep 2022density usually brings efficiency and performance gains as ... moreYes, that's why I said "is more about density".

Wikichips have a nice roadmap with performance and energy improvements:
      https://fuse.wikichip.org/news/7048/n3e-replaces-n3-comes-in-many-flavors/

And N4 is not better than N5P in those two but in density only IIRC. Unless the node is much better now, or that graph is utterly wrong, I can't see why apple chooses it over N5P.

N4P would solve both problems (density and performance/efficiency regressions) but is out of the question tho, as is expected for next year.

Apple superiority in processing section is near it's end

So this was a small upgrade. As expected. They focused more on the cameras and screen.

N4 is more about density than performance or efficiency.

Like intel in the skylake era.

If the x3 cores are as great as suggested, Apple may jump to ARMv9 and new cores. If not, it will be a 4th year squeezing that design.

Grey Wolf, 08 Sep 2022Lol, SD870 is not an outdated chipset. Is very capable chip... moreThe SD 870 is still good, but it IS definitely outdated. It has A77 big cores. No A78, no X1, no X2, no A710, no A510, no A715, etc. It's TSMC N7P. The only reason the value proposition has changed to good from the usual unnecessary and overpriced SD 800 chips is because the price has come down quite a bit since the original SD 865.

It's almost three years old and still one of the best chipsets you can get. I would not buy phone with 888 or 8 Gen 1, because of the energy (in)efficiency/throttling.

Iphone 14 will be the best performer for a long time because of the n4 and vapor chamber while my samsung and next compact sony Xperia heats like hell, so here apple is not just away in raw performance but also it will gain performance thanks to not heating so much (iphone 14 eligibility )

Apple probably is hitting a wall right now and they've been using the same node for three years now. Good thing is there's not much incentive to upgrade.
