By, 07 Oct 2022"It’s not just the bill of materials, but R&D cost... moreGoogle have an entirely different business model to Apple. Hardware sales is not their main source of revenue. It’s just another means to get people into Google’s services where they harvest and sell user data. This is and always has been Google’s main source of revenue and they are able to leverage this towards offsetting the cost of hardware.

Also lower range devices are cheaper to manufacture, using standard off the shelf components across a range of oem’s to minimise production costs.

But that is probably all way over your head, so by all means stick to just ‘Apple greedy’ if it makes simpler for you.

Those costs exist for every manufacturer. But their phones don't cost $1500. Pixel 7 is barely $700, with tax and also comes with freebies and a flagship camera etc

blue, 07 Oct 2022And nobody buys the dumb Fairphone... how is that possible,... moreI legitimately saw someone with a Fairphone just 2 days ago. They confirmed it was indeed a Fairphone. Personally, I'm not into that, but iPhone users love to make sweeping generalizations so it's important to inject a little reality every now and then.

"Production of the iPhone 14 Pro Max costs $501"

Wrong. That's the total price of the components if you buy 1 component each from the suppliers to make 1 iPhone 14 Pro Max. You forget that Apple buys raw, millions or orders. That brings the prices down considerably. I'd bet the truth is $400 or even less.

This says iPhone 14 then only talks about the 14 Pro Max. What about the iPhone 14 vs 13 non-pro models.

AnonD-1066415, 07 Oct 2022Sure, that is why in my country (European country), Pixel 7... moreThen that just means Google will eat the losses and try to compensate it with something else. Because if they kept the same price it means they will do less money with every pixel sold because euro is weaker. But honestly knowing how few they sell them, this propably doesn't make much difference unlike Apple who will sell like 150 million of these phones with lower price. It would show in their q results negatively and shareholders wouldn't like that.

blue, 07 Oct 2022And nobody buys the dumb Fairphone... how is that possible,... moreBecause whole world doesn't buy Galaxy phones either or whatever model there is. There is always some group of people that buy something. And Fairphone isn't that bad option, especially long term and if you're all for fairness of sourced parts and work.

Apple do have their own services, but those being mainly restricted to iOS do not have the reach of a Google’s own, and are not set up as data gathering services as Apple’s business model is not the same as Google’s.

I’m not saying Apple don’t slap on a healthy profit margin to their devices, they clearly do and as much as they feel they can get away with. It always comes back to one thing though, this behaviour not being unique to Apple. Well unless anyone here is able to demonstrate that Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and all the rest are selling their own devices at cost for purely altruistic reasons……anyone?????? 🤷🤷🤷
