If a power limit of a machine is 15 watts, it doesn't mean that it will use 15 watts constantly. It's just that it can't use more than 15 watts. In other words, it's the upper limit. Less demanding games will last longer than more demanding ones on the Switch.

If you set it too low, many games will be unplayable. 3 watts will only be enough for indie games, which don't require lowing the power limit anyway. By the way, battery capacity is only one part of the equation. If the SoC is more efficient, the battery will last longer. 40 Wh doesn't necessarily last much longer than 16 Wh if the SoC isn't more efficient. Both the OG Switch and new Switch have 16 Wh batteries, but the new Switch has much better battery life because the SoC is much more efficient.

          Switch battery is just 16W/H, you can limit your deck to same power as switch and get double battery life. Plenty of people limit their deck to 3-5W to get over 8H of battery life.

The point is that the battery life of the Steam Deck is mediocre and it should be improved. The OG Switch has mediocre battery life, and Nintendo fixed that in 2019 by releasing a new model of the Switch with better battery life. I know that the Steam Deck is a portable PC, but if I buy it, I'll use it to play games at 60 fps. I won't edit a spreadsheet on it. I won't buy it, though, because it has mediocre battery life. Maybe a successor of the Steam Deck will interest me if it has great battery life.

                  1. Emulation, you can do all emulation like Android phones from Nes to Switch plus Ps3, Xbox 360 and Wii u emulation. Some people dont need anything they just buy Deck for Emulation.

                  2. Old pc games, there are thiusands of games out there from 90s to play.

                  3. Other normal desktop uses, deck value is unmatched, very few laptop/desktop can offer Good cpu and Gpu at deck price, you can use it as home desktop wothout any problem.

It's to be expected that it will be able to render games in much higher resolutions and frame rates. The problem is that when you do that the battery life tanks. If you want decent battery life, you have to play games at 30 fps and maybe lower the resolution to close to the resolution the Switch renders. The question is what is the point of the much more powerful hardware if you have to do that to get decent battery life? If I have to play games at 30 fps, I'll prefer to use a Switch OLED. The Steam Deck should be able to play games at 60 fps with decent battery life.

                      If you can get 4 hours in deck at 720p definetly 5 hours is achievable at 540p,

                      With FSR it upscale 540p to 800p without issue, havent seen witcher 3 with that setting but there are plenty of GTA V videos with 5 hours battery life at 540p.

                      If you need more battery life you can even go lower than that.

                      Also plenty of tools to set deck soc at 3W or 5W to assure you get more battery life.

That's the standard setting. It's funny that you brought up the OG Switch. It's well known that the OG Switch has mediocre battery life. Why didn't you say that the new model of the Switch and the Switch OLED could play the Witcher 3 for 4 to 5 hours? Because it would make the Steam Deck look bad? The Steam Deck has worse battery life than the Switch OLED. Also, the Switch OLED is lighter and slimmer and has a better screen. I don't know what you want to achieve by defending the mediocre battery life of the Steam Deck.

                          If you max Witcher 3 in OG switch it last less than 2 hours and switch lite around 3 hours.

                          Not only in Deck you get better battery life, quality is better than switch too.

                          Same to other games, set them as low as switch you get better battery life, ignore setting, max everything you get less than 2 hours of battery life.

                          Even forza Phawx tested it in low setting and 30fps he got 4 hours.

                                        Best handheld game console ever made. It's steal at $399. The level of customization for each game is insane. I can bind a button for any combination, sequence, shortcut and so on.
