Anonymous, 07 Oct 2022burn-in? which year are you living in?You assumed Valve could use the top of the line/newer gen OLED, that supposedly is burn-in free, and still sell at current prices?
Even newer Samsung/LG TVs have oled burn-in.

Anonymous, 08 Oct 2022I don't know why you try to defend the mediocre batter... moreUnlike phones in pc we measure battery by watts/hour and Steam deck has 40W/H battery, set soc to run 4W and its going to last 10 hour set it to consume 20W it will last 2 hours etc.
Websites wants to make headlines so they max everything and call it 2 hours, you can buy that its up to you, some websites has detailed battery life data with different settings, but for sure lock deck to 30fps and TDP limit can get you 4hours in AAA games.
Also many older AAA people get 6+ battery life and some indie games over 8 hours.

Many people don't pirate games. And as I said, even if you legally emulate Switch games, you can't use online play. If you want to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online, for example, the Steam Deck is useless.

Many games only last 2 hours or less on the Steam Deck. The screen resolution is only 800p. If the screen resolution is 1080p, you will only be able to play some games for less than 1 hour. That would be ridiculous.

I recently got the Steam Deck. It is pretty amazing. You can play AAA titles and old games alike.
I find that the hour and a half to 2 hours gameplay on battery is quite enough. The charger is not big and you can also use USB power bank or charge in a car….
Gameplay is great. It plays Steam games essentially I.e. games for PC. You can also play games for dates platforms with emulation but I am not into this. I seem to enjoy AAA titles and indies from the past 5-6 years. Many of those run well - Cyberpunk, Witcher 3, Plague’s Tale, Hades

It means that Steamdeck can run software meant for older platforms through a special “adapter” software called emulator. I do not think the Steamdeck can run Switch games. It can run PS2, Vita, older Nintendo games etc.
Of course some people may pirate old games and new games too.

Also, even if you don't pirate Switch games, you can't play online when you emulate Switch games. So if you want to play games like Splatoon 3 online, a Steam Deck is useless. In any case, you can buy both.

You could also emulate all nintendo, playstation and xbox handhelds including switch. So it offers far better value than switch.

Anonymous, 07 Oct 2022Video games do not need OLED because of static user interfa... moreI agree with the part where you claim the Steam Deck is a milestone [in many ways]. It gives us a perspective for opposition of the current "meta" in PC gaming in terms of how we handle it and also in regard to operating systems used for gaming and further even multimedia purposes in general.
Apart from that it's the first entry to a – likely to exist – new line of products which will, as I believe, include OLED-panels, improved overall technology (like raytracing capabilities) which just weren't the priority when designing the Steam Deck, which also had to be cheap enough to be as accessible as possible. Another handheld for 1000€+ only wouldn't have been able to build a foundation for future income and thus improvements towards the software, which NEEDS many people using the device for data, crucial for further development of even more capable devices.
However raytracing is not a meme. At first it seemed like a gimmick, but the range of possibilities raytracing opens have been proven over time (Cyberpunk, older titles receiving patches). DLSS is further something that the Steam Deck would've benefited from. We need to hope AMD will catch up there if Valve doesn't plan to work with Nvidia instead.
OLED burn-in is not really a concern anymore either. For PC-monitors there also has been some finally relevant releases, but they're not overtaking IPS-panels there yet, but likely soon. An OLED panel will however help drastically with multiple aspects on the Steam Deck. It would've been more expensive though, which is probably the reason for Valve not going with it yet. Understandably.

I got a turquoise Switch Lite for $90 that was in "like new" condition and it came with Breath of the Wild, carrying case, and 64 GB microSD card on top of the 32 GB internal. I got it 4 days ago. NGL, I think I still love my PS Vita slim much more. This is my first Nintendo product since DS Lite in June 10, 2007. I'm just more of a Sony and Sega guy.
I still won't sell the Switch Lite. Since when I ever find a Switch Lite for $90 in perfect condition with BOTW? But this actually prevents me from getting a Steam Deck. I reserved one again last week but I'll probably not respond to the email again. I find the Switch Lite too bulky. Now imagine SD? Plus, I'm getting too old for video games turning 42 in Dec. It doesn't excite me like it did from 1988-2007.
I'll get Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World/Bowser's Fury, and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and be done with it. I still think the best Nintendo product ever was still their Super NES. Most ROMs I have on my phone come from that console. Super Mario World is still my favorite Mario game followed by 3. Then likely keep the Switch Lite in its case for months like my Vita slim.
So my slight letdown from a Switch saves me $400 getting a Steam Deck. I'm aware the Deck is far superior. It can emulate Switch already. But bulky devices and video games just don't interest me like it did in my teens and early-20s. The most convenient solution is playing retro games on your Android smartphone with Bluetooth controller. Games are FREE. If you're bored gaming, you can go on YouTube and surf the web. Easier to pocket them.
