21 October 2022
A feature Pixel phones have had since 2016, which is almost a requirement for Android 13.

Found in many Android phones? Such as? Other than the Pixel phones, I have not heard any other OEMs having this. It doesn't matter anyway as Samsung still gives the longest software support than others.

To me, seamless update means releasing new updates in the same day for all of the devices!

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2022can someone please explain to me what a seamless update is ... moreIt is actually awesome. You just reboot the phone and it has the new OS version, you don't need any downtime for the phone to install the update. I am frankly surprised that Samsung was so lazy as to implement this just now; OnePlus had it since I used to have the 8 Pro and the pixels as well.
I was shocked when I switched to a flagship Samsung smartphone recently and saw that they are still doing the update like in the olden days... lazy!

So if it uses partition b to update but in file manager it shows only one partition like internal storage ok then. I've always created two partitions for my laptop but found the second partition useless and now created only one. As I have a usb drive for my data.

I think Asus UI is very good: plenty of features amd customisation... Really surprised to hear things like this on Samsung

Just use schedule install and set to 02:00. It updates and restarts while you're asleep. That is already seamless.

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2022can someone please explain to me what a seamless update is ... morebasically what happens is that while you're using your phone, the update downloads and installs onto the partition you're not using, and all your data is copied over to that partition. upon the next restart, your phone boots to the other partition, and the original partition is wiped for the next time.

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2022thanks for your explanation! from my point of view, waitin... moreAnother benefit of two partitions is failsafe recovery. Now, how reliable and separate switching between partitions is on a firmware level is one thing, but if you badly update a live partition, the phone is permanently dead or in need for painful recovery through bootloader. In case of failed partition switch, one just needs to switch back to old partition and phone should be back in working state immediately.

from my point of view, waiting for a few seconds or minutes for the update to be installed isn't a problem. so, as i understand, the one and only advantage is that you don't have to wait for the update to be done. well, i won't die from not using my phone for a few seconds or minutes and if you are such an extreme phone user, you can just set the update to be downloaded and installed at night while you sleep (i don't know wether this is possible on samsung devices but i can do it on my huawei phone). the main disadvantage is the storage. as most os updates need several gb of storage to be downloaded, you will always need a certain amount of space left free. i think it would suck if you needed to delete or transfer data from your phone or tablet so the update could proceed. in conclusion, i would stay with the old update process. but that is just my opinion. it might be an advantage for others.

Anonymous, 21 Oct 2022can someone please explain to me what a seamless update is ... moreIn the past, updates were downloaded, unpacked and installed, which took time for update to be completed because it was performed on the only live partition. With A and B partitions, you just alternate between 2 partitions. When running A, update is prepared on partition B and upon reboot, active phone's OS is switched from A to partition B. There is no downtime to perform update other than reboot. Next time, you'll be running partition B and update will be prepared in the background on partition A. After reboot, phone will switch to partition A. Technically it's better, but it takes twice as much space. That's really the only downside.
