Weekly poll: do flagship chipsets still matter?

20 November 2022
Do you have to have the latest top of the line chip or is an older one okay? Or even a mid-range chip?

Once we reach fortnite 4k hdr 120fps , we can take rest from flagship race.
After that work towards battery life , so it won't take anymore than video playback.

I ordered an S20 FE 5g literally this morning - it's too good a deal here in India and honestly it would be more than enough power for me. My OnePlus 6 with an SD845 from 4 years ago still runs fast, if not for the crippling battery life and OP's buggy software I would've used this for another year

With how inefficient and hot the SD888 and SD 8 Gen 1 were, newer is definitely not always better. And even something like the SD 778 which was plenty powerful (even for long term users) and very efficient is probably a great deal.

Yes but just because of the power efficient manufacturing process, performance is good enough even on ones from previous years. However, what we have now in the mid range and low end is much better than what we had about 6 years ago, where anything not flagship was almost always 8x Cortex A53 on 28nm, just to be able to say „Octa Core“ and fool people into thinking it‘s as good as a flagship with big cores that can actually handle real tasks.

All we actually need is a chipset that is reliable and stable in performance and efficient in battery life for years to come instead of overheating and battery killer ones.

          My minimum :
          Medium settings
          Able to capture 4K 30fps
          Efficient (use less wattage)

There's no point in giving the biggest battery and the most advanced cooling system if the OS isn't well-optimized. I have never been an iPhone user, but I do applaud Apple for taking software optimization very seriously. Only Windows Phone can level with iOS when it comes to software optimization.

I used sd 860 and now 870. Flagship soc is not just about speed. There is video support, image processing, great performance after some time... Getting 1/2 years old one with 50% lower price than last gen is smart decision.

I definitely agree with the "Sure, but only for gaming phones" option. Flagship SoCs always tend to have the fastest GPU, so it's not surprising that we don't see any gaming-centric smartphones powered by a midrange SoC. But outside of the mobile gaming world, it all depends on your personal workflow. If you are a true mobile photography/videography enthusiast and always use your phone as a PC via Desktop Mode (e.g., Samsung DeX, Motorola Ready For, Huawei EMUI Desktop, Honor Magic Desktop, LG Screen+), then it's totally worth going for smartphones with a flagship-grade SoC. Even a three-year-old flagship SoC like the Snapdragon 855/855+ is still more than capable in 2022. That is why I never recommend any flagship-grade smartphone to anyone if they aren't an advanced power user. If your only activity is just scrolling through the web browser and social media apps, then a budget or entry-level smartphone is more than enough for the job.

I do hope Snapdragon gen 2 smartphone come with greater user control over there hardware processor performance and power saver mode

There's a lot of features on gaming smartphones in software & hardware that more mainstream standard smartphone should have

Features like being able too control CPU & GPU speed
And such for overclocking for performance and fan control

Or alternatively underlocking for power saving
Other features like dim the screen lower screen Hz and screen resolution should also be added

We need power management profile on smartphones
Simple and easy to set up and switch between

Hopefully next year will be a good year for high end smartphones

Upcoming Dimensity 8200 will be the affordable flagship chipset

I have an S22 Ultra, Snapdragon.
When my wife got an A52S I was blown away by how similar the experience between the phones was. The phone cost 1/4 of mine, but was 95% of my phone.

The A52S is just as smooth as my S22 Ultra. And apart from the s pen, low light pictures and zoom, I don't see any difference at all. She always used to ask me for my phone when taking pictures, because historically I always had the flagship phone, but she stopped when she got the A52S, because in daylight pictures are basically the same.

I installes KOTOR and a few other games on both phones, and I didn't notice any performance difference.

What I do notice is her having a headphone jack, and me not.

From what I can deduct from my experience, I relatively lean towards great or even incredible battery life and only look for moderate performance. Though the phone I'm using right now is slower than what it used to be, the battery still holds well fortunately. I wish to have an optimal point from these variables (degradation of performance and battery life over the time).

I prefer flagship chipsets but not when they overheat and drain your battery like crazy. Unfortunately, this is almost all we have been getting during the last 3 years and I've got no idea why Qualcomm and Samsung keep doing that

Flagship SoCs aren't really any meaningfully better than mid-range SoCs anymore. It's just these sh*t companies forcibly handicapping mid-rangers and their SoCs to justify the ridiculous price of their flagships.

Flagship processor with cooling system definitely are important and cooling but other specs are important also
We still have a long way too go

I do think the ram amount the processor is paired with also is very important
16gb ram should become standard on flagship

Same as for storage is very important the speed and amount of storage
                                      1tb storage
Of overall storage should become standard on flagship

Having a SSD boot drive for os should also become standard 512gb SSD boot drive & 512gb UFS storage

A lot of room for needed improvements on high end expensive smartphones for smoothness

Flagship chipsets are arguably useless and only really exist to justify high smartphone prices. Why bother having so much performance headroom in your phone when it won't even use most of it and will just end up eating more battery life? Maybe they mattered 6-8 years ago when the gap between flagship and midrange chipsets was noticeable but we're at the point where a 778g, which is supposed to be a "midrange" chipset, scores nearly the same as an 855, which is absolutely still a flagship chipset, in benchmarks.
