Weekly poll: do flagship chipsets still matter?

20 November 2022
Do you have to have the latest top of the line chip or is an older one okay? Or even a mid-range chip?

2. D8100 is upper midrange/highend soc and not flagship so it lack some features in Gpu, Modem, isp etc feature wise its inferior to like of sd 888.

Punishing people cause they want the best of everything in a Flagship but the majority wants mediocrity in rendering perfomance and just high CPU numbers is just plain absurd.

RealLifePhones, 21 Nov 2022In my opinion flagship chips are making the wrong improveme... moresame flagship soc can be underclocked and run efficiently, if you dont want that perfomance buy Samsung phone and run in lite mode, or any other brand with equivalent feature.

AhmedSLL, 21 Nov 2022I'm talking about flagships, not upper midrange phone ... moream talking about flagship there are plenty of examples out there,

-Xiaomi 11X had sd 870 while his other Siblings like 11 pro had sd 888
-Moto edge 30 fusion sd 888 while Edge 30 ultra sd 8 gen 1
-Bkack shark 5 RS sd 888 while Black shark 5 sd 8 gen 1
-Vivo Iqoo 9 sd 888 while Iqoo 9 pro sd 8 gen 1
-Realme Gt 2 sd 888 while GT 2 pro sd 8 gen 1

you can see there different brand using different type of chipset in same flagship series, so its normal in Android world has nothing to do with Apple.

Clearly the chip may be old and not as strong as today's.
But itmom the less was strong by standards then and ran fine.
The problem is that nothing is well optimized. Things run heavy just because they can. Why optimize or worry about how certain hardware handles it if you can just the muscle of stronger chips to make up for it.

Even a device like that should be able to run the simple apps they mentioned without any major struggle. But poor optimizing and planned obsolescence among others issues is sadly very real.

In my opinion flagship chips are making the wrong improvements by focusing on GPU power over everything that benefits few gamers instead of pushing efficiency and CPU performance that benefits most.
A vast majority buys entry-level to midrange phones so game devs who don't wanna miss out on most of the potential market optimize their games for lower specs so flagship GPUs are mostly overkill.

snapdragon 888 and 8 gen 1 was a failure. Its a overheating and throttling mess. 7 series is good enough for most people. It's still worth buying used sd865 phones nowaday

The poll results are a satisfaction to me. Glad to know most people are aware that you don't need the most high-end chipset in today's world (can't say the same thing 5 years ago).

We've really reached (or are close to reaching) a singularity point in smartphone performance. You can't go wrong with any midrange chipset nowadays.

That should increase battery life greatly in exchange for negligible performance loss in 90% of situations.

Of course we want the best specs for our money, but are you really going to notice such a significant increase in performance when switching from—say—a SD778G or a Dimensity 1200 to an 8 Gen 1?

5 years ago, the urgent need for top-of-the-line CPU is because we don't want slow laggy devices. But now that's not an issue anymore. Which brings me back to my initial point: it's purely psychological satisfaction knowing you got the best for your money. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
