Weekly poll: do flagship chipsets still matter?

20 November 2022
Do you have to have the latest top of the line chip or is an older one okay? Or even a mid-range chip?

These vote options never match up right.
Obviously they matter and are important. With what these companies charge we deserve whatever we are gonna get.

In fact that's even more so true because going back around 5 years or so we have slowly stopped even getting our monies worth out of these devices. And that tends is only getting worse and worse.

      Exynos sucks

It's almost as if there's a new category of chipsets in town: flagship-killer chipsets. The Snapdragon 870 is a perfect example. It's pretty much a flagship, just not the latest one. And it's been perfectly fine for my needs, including the basic gaming that I do.

In general, it's going to get increasingly harder for smartphone companies to distinguish their premium smartphones from the budget ones in a meaningful way that matters to consumers.

Would a custom ROM really change things much? I'll try it out once I have my S20 FE though, didn't want to experiment before it.

Yes it still matter and cannot be stopped especially for android. i really think that Apple SoC design had the most significant improvements compared to qualcomm and mediatek. We can really FEEL that they are moving forward in ARM architecture. where as we are stuck from the good old 870 and D1200. qualcomm and mediatek needs to step up or they will be left behind by Apple.

Quite a number of phone scored some of the highest in battery endurance with it.

Poll was confusing. Flagships absolutely matter, but I don't have much desire to spend hundreds of bucks for one.

I do like seeing the news about this stuff because of how frontiers are being pushed and how it can be used for emulation and other high powered tasks.

What I DON'T like is how companies keep bloating their apps. YouTube seems to always be gradually slowing down, and the fact that Tinder cannot run at all on SD632 and 2GB RAM is inexcusable considering how incredibly simple the app is. Companies, please stop assuming people have high end SoCs.

I think the oppo find x5 is the only major flagship that came with a last year soc, the 888, which is a terrible example.
Know we have the 8 gen 1+ that has good power efficiency for a flagship soc, so why not use it on the s23 and save the cost of a new 8 gen 2 for the ultra model.

I used to have a flagship phone until I got myself an LG Velvet 5G. It may not have the best camera, but the fact that the supposedly midrange phone has USB-C 3.1 with video output and Screen+ Desktop Mode really makes me question about getting a flagship phone when modern midrange SoCs are more than enough for most average consumers.

Whackcar, 20 Nov 2022I can confirm that SD835 is still pretty strong for most th... moreNostalgia? I remember getting my Essential Phone with 835 and Pixel 3 with 845 like it was literally yesterday. But yes, both hold up.

AetherSX2 for PlayStation 2 emulation needs 845 minimum and I can confirm my Pixel 3 can play Tekken 5 and Final Fantasy XII really well with default settings but not Ico. While 835 will lag in the very first round in Tekken 5 under default settings.

The 835 is still a good chip for basic usage and works better than midrangers in the $200-$400 price range. A9 also aged well but iOS15 really destroyed my iPhone SE1's battery life and more lag, hang, and stutters while browsing. Hence, why I got an SE3 with A15 to replace it. But SE1 will still be used as an iPod.

I only mess with flagship SoCs even if they're a year old or two. Flagships are meant to be supported the longest. Midrange is nice that first few months but then you start getting annoyed by some of its deficiencies like camera, cheaper materials, and write speeds.

Absolutely, but indeed not the latest ones needed. Running s10 exynos 9820 for almost 4 years, still kicks ass. Cpu level is towards new mid range chipset these days, but GPU beats midrange chipsets. In the end 4 years of exceptional performance. If you would get midranger or low end phone with not high end chipset you can forget about phones longivity in every day tasks. With high end chipset you will last for years easely. For example snapdragon 8 gen 2 should easely last 5 years without any issues in dropping the performance in every day use and even gaming.

Unless you are multitasking heavily or playing games like a maniac midrangers are good enough. My current phone is Samsung A52. I mainly use it for calls for internet for music for light games. It isn't that powerful phone but works really well. One UI is amazing. Compared with laggy TouchWiz it is truly amazing. Can't tell about camera as I don't use it. But for battery life it is awesome.

Here on GSM Arena there are people who literally need appointment with a psychiatrist every time a budget phone appears on the market, and they spend all day long complaining about these phones here in the comment sections.

But they only represent the vocal minority, and nobody takes their flippant comments serious other than themselves.
