Weekly poll results: flagship chipsets still matter, but most people don't need the latest one

27 November 2022
A phone with an older flagship chip is great value for money - faster than a mid-ranger but costs the same or sometimes less.

Btw dont forget size of sensors is one thing, but u can have big sensor and still bad photos.

I think, smarphones are slowly moving to the area, where notebooks and PCs are for some time now. Every decent (not the cheapest one) will do the work.
Same comes to smartphones, but for me, here most wanted feature is how long phone can last without charging (not charging speed). Because we are comming to the area, where even average phones have amoled2, 1" camera sensors (ok, 1/1,3) , 5x felephoto...

Midget, 27 Nov 2022Even till this day Snapdragon 855 series is still overkill ... moreI had a phone with 855 and i could not play Genshin Impact 30 fps max settings without dropping frames.

With 888 i can play max settings 60 fps without issues.

For mobile gamers recent flagship soc is still needed but for majority of people old flagship soc or just a mid ranger soc is enough.

Don't really think one needs a flagship chipsets for gaming too. Almost all games run good in current gen mid range chipsets. The advantage with mid range chipsets are that its fast enough, efficient, heat less and cost a lot cheaper too. I don't see any point in getting flagship chipsets other than for bragging rights.

I have Oppo Reno8 Pro 5G which is top of the range of "mid range" i hate that title whoever invented it ..it sounds bad.. Many flagships are nowadays fake scam where is latest SoC and it is only better by little margin and little bit better camera and price is 500 more which is pointless .. Back in days flagships were 500 bucks now grand and people naively accepted it

Basically any chipset that hits around 1000 single thread points in Geekbench is gonna be doing just fine for years. It is nice to have horsepower to spare, but not when it's at expense of battery life and heat.

Great majority of smartphone users use their smartphones for basic daily stuff like browsing web, messaging, video calls, maps navigation, watching videos, listening to music, reading books, online banking, casual low spec requirement games. So most of people doesn't really need anything higher than level of performance of something like Snapdragon 778G/Dimensity 1080, only few little schoolboys who are gaming may need flagship grade SoC to play their games so they buy some cheap brick that lack everything but the powerful SoC (examples are Poco X3 Pro, Poco X4 GT) I don't even take mobile games seriously, it's joke compared to games we have on consoles and PC.

Most people don't need flagship chipsets. They think they do but they don't. I have used flagships, midrangers, budget phones and everything in between. The difference between midrangers and flagships is marginal if you don't click a lot of pics.

Gamers make a small percentage of smartphone users. I think only their need of flagship chipsets is justified.

Flagships matters if you plan to keep phone for longer since somehow magically every phone i had slows down as years pass by. New original battery and full factory reset doesn't help either, but still you don't see no new feature which could slow it down.

let the latest flagship chipsets be used on the laptop/tablet and the underclock/lite version to the phone. People will be happy with long battery life and no heat.. You won't notice day to day performance between the SD 870 and 8 Gen 2.

Flagship phone batteries are smaller than mid-range, and use more power. If you want bigger there will be people saying they need a compact phone.

People buying old and pre-owned phones is better for environment. Less waste and great value to the buyer

What kind of phone do you use actually? Don't tell me you use cutting edge phone while saying most people is fine with ancient 16nm. I have my Mi 5 with sd 820 14nm, it's hot for today standard, while being used and being charged. No, people deserve more for today at least for the cheapest phone, SD 680 or Helio G99 is today's lowest standard: it's 6nm efficient and cool, performance a bit bork but it's fine for most people.
