RAM is definitely needed for this type of application. IMO though Apple allowing 64GB should already cover like 99% of all users, but 10 / 12 cores on the other hand may not be enough for all workloads. I've got an 8GB M1 Air and it is great for a lot of tasks, but there are plenty of times when I miss the 24 threads and 64GB of RAM on my 5900x system. I wouldn't mind owning a 13" Macbook with more RAM and threads even if I need to pay dearly for it, but currently Apple doesn't have any offering I'd personally prefer other than the Air specifically for the compact size.

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2022Sadly, it probably consumes several times the amount of powerIntel does not make crap chips like samsung makes tensynos.

I'm a programmer. Usually use Visual Studio IDE while having 20+ tabs opened on Microsoft's Edge and listening to Windows Media Player. All that runs smooth on 16GB LPDDR4X. I bet anything beyond 24 GB is just a gimmick, for today's standards

I’m really interested in the energy efficiency and the thermals. Big numbers don’t mean much if the machine starts thermal throttling after 5 min or if it can only be in “high performance mode” when connected to an outlet. (I know that’s not the case with the previous M1 generation MB Pros, which are great machines btw, but the base M2 chip on the M2 Air raised some valid concerns.)
