Google needs to focus on the videography on the Pixel. It's always been the weak spot for them.

When the Pixel 4xl with the SD855 people would still complain about performance so really doesn't matter what chipset Google uses in any Pixel device people will still whine and cry. The Pixel devices are not about top performance.

G2 isn't just little less performant. Its comparable to 3yr old sd888. You're gonna pay that much for this? If it was just less performance maybe you have a point, but its extremely inefficient and overheats. Even a SD778g is more usable. Why is even Scamsung not using it?

IMX363, 20 Dec 2022Let's see what Google brings. Hopefully something new ... moreYou do not difference because you look at jpeg, that is extremely enhanced to "look pretty" but in the end ruins the photo.
Just saw post on weibo days ago, person was criticizing apple's deep fuision. Photo of a cat, the fur seemed cat was bit wet.

                  Problem is :

                  - most brands do not give up on frame stacking, then they use sensors with low resolution output (12 or 16). Because of this enhance photo to increase level of texture, even if it looks fake or worse than it would be.

                  - to solve this, brands should be using higher res bayer sensors like 20-30MP, then downscale to 12. But to keep to take advantage of frame stacking, sensors need to be much faster and OEMs are not willing to pay for this.

Imagine making a bayer version of 989 with built-in DRAM enough to make speed 8ms. Would be super expensive, no phone maker is gonna pay for this. Not even Apple would burn cash on this.

Let's see what Google brings. Hopefully something new and really big because cameras have been stagnant for a while. Sensors are getting bigger but it does not seem to affect end image quality drastically. Smartphone pictures still look very digital, with the only exception being Nokia 808 PureView.

Nobody seems to want to address tough problems, like shutter speed control in bright light, terrible edge blur on modern cameraphones, unpleasant depth of field, video shake at night. Easier to slap on pointless 8K recording.

Not sure how much better staggered HDR and GN2 sensor can be cause if it was that good by itself then all the Xiaomi Mi 11 phones wouldn't have such a terrible camera performance. I still believe that software is the main factor and the only thing that GN2 might have to offer is a bit faster processing.

Anonymous, 20 Dec 2022Still same sensor, not "huge" update. And Samsung... moreYeah, because Chinese brands are so famous for their software solutions on a weaker hardware.. it's a sarcasm of course lol. In fact big majority of them are using the best possible hardware for the money but with lack of software support and more stabile solutions and all that because of a different bussines model which counts on quantity, not so much on quality. Not all of them of course, but big majority. Because of that quantity aproach they don't have time to polish software for every model they have. In the other hand, Google with his Pixels is well known for their software magic on "older" and "weaker" hardware I think they are experts in that field so it's not surprise to see them doing it again.

Funny enough but we're talking about chipset performance on news about camera. LOL... I guess there is a lot of frustrated mobile gaming population as in my opinion those are the only users who could feel the perfomance difference between say S8 G1+ phone and Google's custom G2.
                                      Peace out!

Sure, any progress is welcome. I would hope that this will not just yield better speed, but hopefully/maybe also a less artificial HDR look to the pictures, which is the only thing i don't like so much with the Pixel photos look. And far more interesting would be a better performance in terms of video captures. It would be great if Pixels could catch up here with iPhones.
