New EU legislation can bring back user-replaceable batteries

20 December 2022
The provisional agreement covers everything from phones, through electric scooters to EV batteries and will require recycling and free collection of old batteries.

I'm still not so sure if they could introduce water resistance with a removable back on all phones. The Xcover is all plastic, but what about glass back phones? What about the ones where the back curves into the frame?

Daemon Targaryen, 20 Dec 2022When it comes to a COMMUNICATION device like a smartphone, ... moreYou want more competition. Apple wants to keep themselves high. Apple takes advantage of every opportunity in the unregulated world. In fact of it weren't for the EU's stupid laws to bring down the Apple they hate so much, other companies would be having a hard time. That's really what this is about. Even a simpleton can see that.

      Hello guys and girls.
I dont want to be rude or offence anyone or EU laws regulations and legislations but if this and simmilar which has been taken from phones past 10 years comes back will bring more bad than good.
One way is to help environment and mother earth.
But on the other side those people representing EU are usually stubborn clumsy people with no experience of hard work and how are things working and are made.
They usualy thinks millions times faster than they could and a very hot head makes usually bad decisions like this one.
So on the other hand with pricing and inflation of past 2 years even a low grade device with all your needs would cost at last 300 or 500 but that wouldnt satisfy anyone.

In other words not everything what is good for environment is good for economy and not everything which is bad for economy wil be good for environment.
You all must look on a problem from all ways and aspects. As a EU law, as a custoemer and as a manufactuer.

      Lastly less is sometimes more.

No 3.5mm jack no buy, 20 Dec 2022We demand the following to be mandatory on all phones all o... moreMan you funny noone will do that.
Replacable batteries are done for i hope it will last as it is because sealed battery is less fragile to damage.
Jack is a dark age technology long time prevailed by wireless tech no need to go back to the ancient times of a stone age tech.
Same goes for SD slot. If a phones with 1TB of disk space starts under 100 SD problem will be solved. No need to have fragile SD card easy to breaks and impossible to repair only to format and loose all data.
Notification led is another waste go think. Like is a problem to check your phone.
Lastly unlocked bootloader is crap. Woiding warranty by unnecessary doing i personaly would prohibit anyone from claiming its warranty if he unlocks bootloader and install own crapOS.

Better would be if phones come with minimum 1TB of disk space and affordable prices equal to today pricing but with much bigger disk.
Jack is old and now mostly useless tech because wireless is the future.
Soon or later wireless will evolve enough that no jack will keep up thats why wireless audio and tech is way more researched than vired one.
Noone needs a stone age technology.

Non removable batteries exist here since 2006 year before apple made first cell phone.
Apart from catching more dust and liquid your phone gets only worse over time.
Sealed batteries couldnt afloat as much as batteries of the old times.
This is a pure stupidity but EU knows what they doing.
But for a hot head like EU people they usualy dont think how its possible they just wants and it must be.
                    This is wrong.

StealthRequiem, 20 Dec 2022A predictable consequence of the battery legislation would ... moreThe argument in defense of restricting access to a consumable element is utter idiocy.

Batteries are a consumable. Therefore direct easy access and replacement to consumables should be provided, without discussion.

Every manufacturer designed handsets with removable batteries up until Apple decided to implement a non removable one. Their marketing at the time was for design purposes, but critics were outspoken & voiced their concerns that this was purely a financial decision and for financial gain - to enforce customers into Apple's "system" & to clutch reliance into Apple's aftercare.

They marketed a sense of exclusivity - with other manufacturers then following suit. Purely for financial gain.

It's not difficult for manufactures to design handsets (like they once used to, for many years) with removable batteries while simultaneously including features such as waterproofing & fast charge. If you believe they are incapable of doing this, then you're probably the type of consumer who is easily appeased & duped by marketing hype, whilst being impetuous & jejune

What next? No internal storage required, because everything can now be loaded onto the cloud? These types of ideas are not innovative. They are designed purely to capitalize on naivety and ensnare consumers into a state of dependency - with the product not actually being yours to own - only yours to use within a limited capacity and with prerequisites.

When it comes to a COMMUNICATION device like a smartphone, you need to have both Android and iPhone to have the greatest range of people to COMMUNICATE with. Hence, stop bickering between the two and use them both. In case one needs charging, use the other.

I'm just happy EU seems to be going against planned obsolescence. What Apple has done is actually bad for the Earth. EU needs to push Apple to a direction that's about practicality over profit. Apple is worth a trillion, how much more money do they really need?

                          Bring all this back -
                          Removable batteries
                          MicroSD slots
                          Headphone jack
Compact phones (like XZ1 Compact and SE 2016)
                          Metal backs
                          IR blaster
                          FM radio
Charger and wired headphones in the box

^ These all need to be back for all flagship devices. LG and HTC needs to return to making smartphones.

If these features do return, we can pretend phones from 2017-2022 never happened thanks to Apple's obsession of removing key features to profit from. AirPods are a joke. Thank goodness Sony, Bose, and Sennheiser do exist for over-ear headphones with 20 to 60-hour battery life than the crappy AirPods' 2-3 hrs.

I am glad to hear this and I hope they will definitely do it. Because, I have never seen a non-removable battery replaced properly. They either install a knock off battery or they cannot close the phone properly. That's why I will never get my iPhone 7Plus' battery replaced, even though it says "Service"... When the battery dies; I will make a nice funeral for the phone. I am using it just for listening to music with a paired BT speaker anyway...

A predictable consequence of the battery legislation would be manufacturers pulling out of the EU market and relying on user imports and dropshippers for sales. I can't see fringe manufacturers, even big ones like Sony, designing a user replaceable battery specifically for the EU. I'm hoping this particular legislation will not influence the UK or the rest of the world.

The argument for user replaceable batteries is a weak one. It would make the phone more expensive, the battery capacity probably smaller, would result in more batteries, would be inherently less safe, would mean batteries possibly not being recycled with the phone etc etc

Not all EU legislation makes sense. For example there is a stupid legislation that stops phones sold in the EU from having FM radios.

I have been loving and in full support of all the legislations EU has been bringing but TBH even though this will make the environment and our life's easier this is a bit too tough of a demand to put on tech companies

I don't think it would hold
