Weekly poll: what is the ideal screen size for a smartphone?

15 January 2023
And how important is the screen size when you are considering a new phone?

Sort by:

Perhaps it's not so common now but a year or so ago, screen size and frame size didn't go hand in hand. Large bezels being the culprit.

My S22 is just right for me - it has the balance of screen size and frame size. Enough screen to be able to watch a video/movie but not so bulky and cumbersome that you need clown pockets to store it.

i got the s22 ultra and at the beginning i thought "wow, this is quiet large". i was switching from a huawei mate 20 pro with 6.4" screen. it didn't take a week till i got used to the screen size of the s22 ultra and started thinking that it could also be larger, like 7" or 7.2". i wouldn't have a problem with a larger size. but i don't know, maybe the average people have smaller hands. i am 1,88m tall. i got relatively large hands. the poll on this article shows people like the smaller screens more. but one-handed use is not just a problem for people with small hands, it is also a problem for people with large hands, like me. i couldn't use a phone smaller than ~6.2", my fingers would be too large to hold the device and tap on it accurately.

in conclusion, i do not understand the point of this poll. there are people all over the world with different hand sizes and therefore different phone sizes exist.
moreover, it is not possible to fit all the functions and features that large phones, like the s22 ultra, have into smaller ones. the camera, the s pen, the battery, they wouldn't fit into the standard s22. that is something everyone needs to cope with.
but asking people what phone size they prefer is absurd. do i have to fear now that large phones with large screens will disappear because most people prefer smaller phones? there should be phones of all sizes available, everyone has his own preferences that should be covered by the smartphone industry.

for me (with average hand size ,asian) 5.3-5.9 display with a little bottom bezel .

i specifically require bottom bezel because it prevents unintentional palm touch while using on one hand mode

i ducking hate teardrop ,notch . because they look unnatural . pixel 4 is my ideal phone in this matter . nokia 3.1 plus , redmi note 5 well all beautiful thin bezel on both n bottom phone . too bad that design didn't stay for long

I bought the Mi Max 1, 2 and 3.. all the size of a table. Having to put up with a tiny 6.7 inch screen now makes me yearn for Xiaomi's halcyon true phablet days.

My belief is if I'm going to get a large smartphone, it might as well come with the largest battery capacity. The Unihertz Tank weighs 560 g which is still less than the Sherpa PD100 power bank with 25,800 mAh that I used to carry around for 3 years (2019-2022) before it could no longer hold a charge and a Steam Deck at 100 g more.

The Unihertz Tank basically weighs more than double of a Z Fold 4 but guess what? It's battery can last 5X longer being the battery is over 5X bigger. And it's far more durable and is $1400 cheaper. Might as well go all-in in size if it can eliminate all your battery anxieties.

Ok, 15 Jan 2023The pixel 4a was the best-sized smartphone in my opinion. It's one of my favorites as well, but the Pixel 6a is probably perfect for me. I also recently got a iPhone 13 which is about the same size and I like that too. I like the size of the phone not iOS.

zenphone 9 is only 'perfect' phone at present, with it's 3.5mm, small size an an actually decent main cam it's the only 1 with all these plus points except sony's weird ultra wide's (they don't even use their own best cmos in them though).

no mention of zenfone 9 ,it's the perfect size

Sony XA with no side bezels and 5" 16:9 is already 67mm wide.

At most 5,15" .. Also with more than 80% of front taken by screen, phone would be shorter than iphone 7.
Unless then phone is too thick, not even a 3000mAh can fit, which cant handle 90-120Hz, let alone QHD.

i still use a 5.7" inch phone from 2019 one of the reason for keep using this phone is it's size

I'll only go for a large phone if it packs 22,000 mAh battery and I only need to charge it once every 6 to 10 days.

Unihertz Tank > Doogee V Max

Doogee doesn't seem as efficient as they claim and it's $200 more. But it does have expandable storage that the Unihertz doesn't.

                                    Bigger is better.
Having phone which looks like Oneplus 11 having mixed specs of Moto X30 Pro. Samsung S22 Ultra, Google Pixel 7 pro and Oneplus 11 taking best of all said phones with a durability of a Oukitel WP19, Battery of Doogee V Max, charging from Realme with 240W charger and a pricing of Moto X40 or less would make an ideal phone for me.
Also the size must been between 7 and 8 inches.
Anything smaller is usualy garbage because tiny phones are for tiny girls, asian people and those who does not grow enough in life to use bigger phone.
In other words small phones are good for pressing several keys at once when typing due to thick fingers and then text looks like a egymtian hieroglyphs written in traditional chinese language backwards using a Brail alphabet.
