Weekly poll: how fast should fast charging be?

22 January 2023
When it comes time to get a new phone, how fast would you want it to do a full 0-100% charge? What about fast wireless charging?

Go watch video of these phones being charged. Do you think it is fine temperatures of 47, 49, 50 or 56 celsius when person is not even touching the phone?

If you connect a 10W charger to same device, temperature will be much lower than this.

All BBK phones with 65W or more always remais above 46 celsius while charging. Xioami phones get even hotter.
Video of mix4 shows phone almost 60 celsius.

My old phone with SD810 and 18W charging was always below 30 while charging.

Considering most mid range and upper phones have fast charging for quite some time already along with respectable charging speeds, this is the least of the problems I'm thinking of when choosing a new phone. Pretty dumb questions

Mohammad, 22 Jan 2023Silly question. Who doesn't want to top up their phone... moreFor me it's not a feature to determine my phone choice. I really don't care at all about charging speed. That's for slaves who can't get away from their little masters for even a minute.

Very fast charging ends up with higher absolute power consumption and high peak power consumption when many people are charging at the same time. This is bad for the climate problem.

Apps like accubattery said my battery had about 82% , when it fact it was about 50% when I had it replaced.

sanshiro, 22 Jan 2023Graphene Battery. Problem solved. Lithium should stop.Man as long as Graphene batteries are 100 times more expensive than litium ones this goes nowhere.

Something isnt adding up here.. Samsung's galaxy note has the worst battery scandal in smartphone history

                  Has slow charging...

And all the fast charging nah sayers can just use their old chargers anyways so if it's not even mandatory for them.. what's the issue?

Anonymous, 22 Jan 2023I used same phone for near 7 years. Battery was replaced ... moreYou are not totally right.
You are lucky the your phone manufacturer still manufactures or sellers have it in stock for 2-3 years.

I once bought a phone, the battery died, I couldn't find replacement battery because the manufacturer isn't selling anymore. I had to toss the phone into the drawer and get a new one.

Don't get me started on how hard replacing batteries are becoming.

Silly question. Who doesn't want to top up their phone in less time? Of course faster is better but I think the same thing that happened to HDDs in PC world is happening here with batteries. Ultra fast chargers for super consuming and super small capacity batteries. Battery technology should keep up with charging speeds. Otherwise crazy fast charging that lasts for a day or two is useless.

Artem S. Tashkinov, 22 Jan 2023Looks like fewer than 10% of people here give a f* about th... moreMan in theory a slow charging speeds would and could make your battery last longer.
In theory a fast charging could make your battery life span shorter.
But in reality not fast charging but temperature makes direct affect to battery health and as long you temperature des not cross certain point it does not matter whether you use faster pr slower charging.
Even realme labs managed to revive dead cells and from 800 charging cycless battery went to 1600. So from 20% loss in 2 years its 20% loss in 4 and half years and believe me it has nothing to do with fast charging as long as battery temperature does nt cross point where it gets overheated and will damage.
Lastly batteries from 10 years ago where even button phones like Nokia N8 battery would afloat evolved too not only charging technology.
And many people including me and many users who having fast charging phone which came to the world by making dash charge on phones back in 2017, many researchlabs included said realme lab, GSMArena team, Zack Nelson aka Jerryrigeverything and many more famous people would say you the same.
Difference on impact on battery by using slow or fast charging is close or equal to zero as long as battery temperature does not cross certain levels and most cheap or even more expensive phones will retain 90% battery capacity after 2 years depends on how you use your phone. Heavy gamers should have 80-85% and common users who can manage that most of their phones would last 2-3 days on a charge would have 90-95% after 2 years.

But since time is money faster is better.

Lastly for said newbies who did not get it. If they charge their phone overnight and for example from 22pm to midnight phone manages to get 100% batery those 6-8 hours untill they wake up battery is still charging because even a standing still phone have some minor drain. And this will damage battery more than pluging off from charger when phone battery reaches 100% compared to 6-8 extra hours still pluged to charger when battery is already at 100%. Its simple as that.

Slow charging is a liability to the development of batteries there is no purpose for it

If you want to argue that fast charging destroys the battery then that is a blessing in disguise

Because that will push for stronger battery chemistry and innovation.. it's literal problem solving

Meanwhile slow charging is some complacency , stagnation DISGRACE

What problem does slow charging have that is unique to it that needs to be solved... I'll tell you what it is

                              SLOWNESS... The irony huh

As I always say, it is not crucial the speed of charging, what matters is how long can phone hold during the day. Of course 15-30 min would be fine (my xiaomi 12T Pro can do it).
Questions are not the best: as my next phone will be S23 Ultra, I can not answer what is my wish, but give some shameful numbers. We all can remember, how S22 ultra with 45W charging is just as fast as with 25W charger.

Waiting for the 1000000 watts charger

Snart opinion, 22 Jan 2023Of course, any phone with bad battery health will charge fa... moreThe phone I'm talking about is the vivo iQOO 5 Pro, which is supposed to charge this fast. But of course it has bad battery health, that's why it lasts at least a day or more.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, I'm using that phone on max brightness, 120hz always turned on, 4G always turned(except during night time) and always-on display being turned on during the day as well. So everything maxed out, yet it still lasts me a day and has 40-50% left at the end of the day.
