Flashback: the Snapdragon 625 efficiently conquered the mid-field in 2016

22 January 2023
This chip wasn't the best - but it was good enough and it wore that as a badge of honor.

      It is chip from 2018.

A9 is weaker than SD810, how can A7 be stronger?

I was using the moto G5+ non "S" varient till June last year and TBH as a daily driver and really light gaming it wasn't that bad
I would have maybe continued to use that if only the device didn't got bricked (emmc failed and couldn't restore the O's if curious)
Well the chip wasn't a powerhouse but it wasn't a weakling either

SD 625 was made by TSMC and not samsung ... that's why it was efficient !

And it can’t even top the Apple A7 which is from 2013. So it may be better than some flagships from 2013, but not all of them. And that‘s just poor when considering that in the price range these phones sell, which is like $80 to $120, you can get flagships from 2017 or 2018 that will be vastly superior in performance. And these phones already sacrifice everything except screen size (not quality just size) and battery size to get the best processor in the price range.

Akashi Seijuro, 22 Jan 2023Now if only Qualcomm were to make another efficiency-orient... moreIf it was about efficiency while being decently powerful, the best they could do is use the non-ARMv9 cores on the latest TSMC node. That would be something like 2 or 4 A78 cores and 4 A55 cores on TSMC N4. Anything else would be less efficient. The 625 may have had long battery life but you‘d also spend some time that the phone was on with waiting for things to load.

Pure A73 does not make sense, there have to be bigger and smaller cores for good efficiency, so they can use what is needed depending on the task.

"even 4K video recording (using both AVC and HEVC)"

Well, Snapdragon 695 (from 2022) is not able to record 4K video!

The 2016 Snapdragon 625 supported 4K video recording but the Snapdragon 695 doesn't. This is why no phone using the 695 should be taken seriously and no phone in general over €200 that doesn't support 4K video either

I had a Lenovo Vibe P1 with the SD615 chip, and it was horrible.

Underperforms and overheats, the SD615 has aged so badly, that older flagship chipsets seem much better than this e-waste.
