Flashback: the Snapdragon 625 efficiently conquered the mid-field in 2016

22 January 2023
This chip wasn't the best - but it was good enough and it wore that as a badge of honor.

The problem does not always lie in the process node, sometimes the ARM cores itself are an issue...

This thing support 4k recording but the 695 don't despite having 6x performance is the biggest joke from Qualcomm. After 6,9 years, we have to pay almost double just to get phones that can't record high quality videos like we did in 2016, while 4K TVs can be found at $500+ price range compared to $1000+ in 2016.

765g and then 778g. 7 gen 1 and 2 are inefficient. As long as Samsung nodes are used, it will be inefficient

Anonymous, 22 Jan 2023Don't use Samsung Just use tsmc 6nm It doesnt matter if its Samsung or Tsmc, both Foundries A510 use more power, there are reasons why midrange and Lowend still use A78+A55 combo

                        I had the Lenovo P2 (s625 + ambled + 5100mAh) for around 3 years
Impressive battery life but only 1 year of support
I'm now with its (sort of) successor, the Xperia 10 IV (s695, 6" and 5000mAh)

Indeed that SD 625 was a legendary. Continued by SD 636, thus it's soul continue to SD 665, then SD 680. All of them has magnificent battery life for mid ranger, though now the definition of mid ranger itself is slowly fades, starting with SD 680 has no 4K recording while SD 625 had one. SD 695 is too pricey to be called mid ranger, and lack of 4K recording question its position. Hopefully next SD 6 gen 1 or SD 7 gen 1 could bring mid ranger market to its glory again.

Now if only Qualcomm were to make another efficiency-oriented SoC like this for budget devices, maybe an all-A73 or A75 CPU built on at least 7nm process, then we'd probably get insane battery life with budget phones today.

I think dimensity 700 or G95 is the popular one?

this processor is legend, I used it from Redmi Note 4X 2017 to Redmi S2 in 2022. As I recall I get 10-12 hours of SOT on the Note 4X.

Xiaomi used the 625 in a fk ton of phones

I’d say the legacy of being the annoying 6 series chip is now carried by the Snapdragon 695. Nobody wants it because it cannot even record 1080p at 60fps or 4K video at all.
