Sony Xperia 1 V image leaks, it might literally be the hottest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 device

The only hottest thing about Sony phone (every year) is its ridiculously expensive price. Always leave you sad and broke. Shame on you Sony

Well, my 1 mk3 has been in service three times now. Needs to go in again for microphone interference noise, but I'm not paying for this again. Nice phone but it's fragile internally. I really hope they have improved on this with later iterations.
I'm probably going elsewhere next time because a 1 year hardware warranty is not enough at all.

TheGoldenMellifluous, 03 Feb 2023I think, based on what I've seen since Xperia and Sony... moreI think Sony is truly desperate trying to find its position in the phone business. They barely live and the phones only exist thanks to the Alpha cameras. Without this division Sony phones would be effectively dead. And even the marketing "connecting with Alpha" failed to work for them.

If this is true, with a pinch of salt, could be good - as long as Sony actually improve camera's more than just hardware. It's simple for them to and I'll list why after I rant how even though I own the Xperia 1 IV, it loses out to the iPhone 12 Pro Max in most camera instances. It lacks a good automatic mode in photo & video, lacks night mode (photos at night, hand held in a group - you need to click and bang have a good photo). Overheats like a Note 7 - stops recording video in 10-15 minutes top, even if it's at 1080p. Couldn't record my neice's school play as it shut down the app. Used the older spare phone that I upgraded from to get the rest of the footage - which had worse quality. It's stabilisation is non existent compared to an iPhone or Samsung. It's video quality in general is worse and HDR isn't as good. The camera has lower steps in dynamic range across the board. To actually improve, yes they need better hardware, but also they need better AI implementation. Samsung is leveraging the same AI know how they use in their TV's and baking that into their camera AI. Which Sony also has at their fingertips and could easily do by object recognition and optimising captured image quality. The bokeh mode also needs serious attention and to be functional - it seems like an after thought. I do genuinely like the 21:9 video recording aspect - but the quality loss is quite a lot, maybe larger sensors can counter that. But what would help is better video processing like an automatic log profile and conversion in real time being coded to make colours consumer friendly in the background (could be a manual choice, raw log or end output), e.g. Cinetone or an equivalent. The white balance in automatic, usually has a green tint - that also needs optimising. The camera apps have a lot of crashes and bugs that need ironing out. If the sensor lacks dynamic range in one shot, using the same multi-frame technology improve hdr in photos and especially in bokeh mode. In video, the multi-frame stuff is still inferior to say an iPhone and needs upgrading to 60fps. Depending on resolution of sensor could down-sample 6K to 4K for better quality. There is a lot of cool camera tech that can be added by the Alpha team if they actively work on this rather than as something for marketing. Also, Sony maybe need more model variation - sure they can keep things slim with a "base model" Xperia 1 V. But they need to be confident in going wild with a new higher tiered model. They can price that at Fold Levels, but it needs wacky creative stuff like a 1 inch 21:9 native sensor or a hybrid sensor with some pixels doing pixel binning and others not for best of both worlds. Go bonkers, as long as it creates a better experience. Sure, if you claim phones can beat DSLR's - what better medium to prove that than your own smartphones. It would be a good platform to market these crazy wacky sensors and push different ways to express video/ photo. How about combining periscope zoom to a larger body extending pole style movement to get larger zoom range. How about combining an ultra-wide and primary camera into one larger than 1" sensor than crops in to give regular image or has partial moving elements that go to 2 times (periscope style zoom) for the parts that would normally be cropped out on the sensor. How about an integrated CPU/ GPU in the camera, maybe some ray tracing calculations to calculate how light is falling in the current scene and how to best capture what's happening. Is motion happening outside the frame, how to compensate for something that is about to move in or the opposite, something moves out. With geo-positioning data, the camera can now live weather, is it cloudy, sunny, raining, snowing. There is just so much Sony can do and they drop the ball - every year! Hopefully this year, with the special V for Victory edition they change for the better.

My old XZ1 was glorious, beautiful design no silly 21:9. Sony messed up massively in the design part. The specs have always been excellent though.

IpsDisplay, 03 Feb 2023I'm gonna be honest with you it's just a minority... moreAccurate honestly. Like with Windows updates, the average person will also not care that much for subsequent Android updates. They will probably update just to make the constant update notification go away.

Overall looking good. It means Sony still recognizes the value in sticking with this tried and true no-frills design. Not needlessly reinventing the wheel and only focusing on what matters (e.g. camera). I like what I see.

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2023Why do people care so much about updates? Can you tell diff... moreBecause Sony devices are incredibly buggy. You're always hoping that the next update might make the phone work but it never does. Sony is less than stock Android - features are missing.
It's a bad phone for security patches too. Monthly security releases are released every 40 to 75 days and they're 1 or 2 months old when they arrive.

I would like to hope that the camera algorithms will differ significantly from the traditionally bad ones in Xperia`s .. But I am deceiving myself, very well knowing that this will not happen, because this is SONY ... ))

Flash is pretty smartly integrated into the camera bump, which is normally covered in glass with the possibility of light leaking into the sensors.
This also means cleaner looking cases.

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2023Why do people care so much about updates? Can you tell diff... moreYou can easily sideload apps with Android 14. If you want to sideload legacy apps, you have to use a command shell. It's still very easy. If you can type comments, you can type commands.

Reds, 03 Feb 2023I use the original xperia 1 and believe me when I say I ado... moreYour friend is a good friend then.
I personally, would also say the same thing, if my friend has different phone brand than mine. Thats because of friendship.
If we see the difference between A52 20:9 and regular Xperia 21:9 the difference is barely noticeable. It would be different story if the other phone is Z Fold 4 with 23.1:9 aspect ratio..

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2023Phone even has wind filter, you claim zero noise cancelling... moreWind, cars, music, kids playing, vacuum cleaners, kitchen machines and so on, isn't noise? Well, that's new. Noise cancelation mics filters the unnecessary noise from the right noise (your voice). That's why phones have 2 or 3 mics today. To clean up the noise around you, in favor of your voice.
