One of the reasons is the longest and most sophisticated support of the phones. Not only software, but also hardware production (spare parts, service, tools...) The chinese don't do that, so they can be cheap.

They probably believe their $300 Redmi did cost $280 to build, when it's probably closer to $120.

Developing own OS and running own app store costs money. People just see the BOM number and think Apple just pockets the entire difference as pure profit. That's not how things work. At all.

The comments whenever BOM price comes up on a phone is hilarious. This is purely cost if the material. It doesn't include research, overhead, fixed cost, transportation and a whole whack load of other costs.

The chip is 20% of $464 so it costs $92.80. If it‘s 11$ more than last year, that means last year this time the A15 did cost $81.80. For being such a minor upgrade, if even (CPU efficiency may be slightly better and max performance is a bit better, GPU efficiency seems a bit worse. Of course, other components like the new display controller, ISP, neural engine etc. matter as well), that‘s a pretty hefty markup. And the all-new 3nm for A17, I guess that will be even more expensive. This is another reason why Apple should relax putting every new feature they can imagine in a major iOS release, and instead focus on making the OS use the available resources more efficiently, and with less bugs and less battery drain.
