Pixel 7a with same tensynos 2 (same isp) but smaller imx787 will not match pixel 7.
Software cant solve this.
When a 1/1.5" oppo does worse than 1/1.7" iphone/samsung/sony , it is oppo fault not credit of the other.
So called "software" could not make phones match rx100 camera because of inferior lenses, despite imx989 is bit larger than imx486.

Facts right, 13 Apr 2023IMX858 is 1/2.4" or 1/1.7" so its anyways larger ... morePerson means trading imx598 for 858.
598 is 25% larger.

What is to gain, 13 Apr 2023Wait, so basically Ultra-Wide and Periscope is getting a do... moreBecause it is price to pay for 4th camera and keeping periscope at 120mm.
Vivo has dual 1/2" but one 1/2.9". Also periscope is at 90mm.
When you say 1/2.5" , that is just pixel area, does not count frame around sensor.
There is space issue in there.
This phone has 4900mAh, unlike other with 5000.

Funny how Xiaomi is still advertising the hardware that they don't even make themselves. Besides, on modern camera units, the software play a more important factor nowadays. Just look at how the Google Pixel can deliver great/better photos using old sensors.

It's bigger than the jn1 for sure but smaller than the imx586 zoom and ultrawide on the Xiaomi 12s ultra, which was the predecessor. Still the new sensor has more advanced tech like DOL-HDR.

Physical law you know, those tiny lenses mostly plastic ones can't make high quality photos with large sensors and offering you some crazy 400mm focal length.
Why else real camera lenses are so big if its anyway possible to get same quality in smaller size?

EG3Po, 13 Apr 2023I fail to understand using separate sensors for 3x (80mm) a... moreBecause Xiaomi use IMX858 sensor which is much larger than some kind of 1/3.52" sensor what Galaxy S23 or other +200mm cameras use.
So to get that kind of focal length in larger sensor needs a bit different kind of lens and I guess there are not yet any compact lenses to do the job on market?
So thats why Xiaomi doesn't offer that much zoom.
Those periscope zooms in other phones make contrastless dull photos anyways.

"The 13 Ultra, however, will use the IMX858 for its ultrawide camera (with PDAF, of course), the 3x telephoto and the 5x telephoto."
Where has Xiaomi confirmed that they will have a "5x telephoto" ?

Wait, so basically Ultra-Wide and Periscope is getting a downgrade in terms of sensor size, downgrade in low light and natural depth of field capability. IMX858 is more or less equivalent to JN1, sensor, which is quite lower end sensor.

I fail to understand using separate sensors for 3x (80mm) and 5x (135mm). Why not dedicate a sensor for 10x (270mm) and use algorithms to make up the difference? Most phones out there can produce web-usable photos at 10x using just a 3-5x optical zoom anyway.

Btw you know you can download 3rd party cam apps that'll let you record in atleast upscaled 4k (my find x5 can do 3264x1836, got it running at a bit rate of 70mb/s and looks better than standard 1080p/default bit rate and basically no quality loss when digital zooming during video playback).
