Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 coming with 3.7GHz prime core, new CPU clusters

28 April 2023
The new chip, still built on the 4 nm node, will have a 1+5+2 CPU combination.

Oki, 28 Apr 2023It seems Qualcomm only cares about their flagship processor... moreSamsung has yield issues, but other than that sd 4 gen 1 and 7 gen 2 are used by lot of phones, some realme, Oppo, Xiaomi etc came with 7+ gen 2 already.

Arm messed up a lot with those small cores, they use lot of power up to 2W, compare to A55 which used 0.5W.

Sure would be nice to actually control the CPU clockspeed and TDP target without rooting the dang phone. Sometimes I can't even do THAT because the bootloader can't be unlocked. Or I could just turn on battery saver and be stuck on 60hz with text saying that it will limit CPU power to 70% while giving me no option to change it further.

Sono, 28 Apr 2023We need to compare it in relative terms and not in absolute... moreThe knowledgeable ones about chips say this whole nanometer thing today is just a marketing ploy.

This almost seems ready for high-end Tablets. With 10-inch and larger devices, they could use huge heatsinks for ensuring battery and processor efficiency by large heatsinks.

Instead of accelerating SD8 research, those guys at Qualcomm should've put ancient CPU designs to rest, we're talking SM6225 (Snapdragon 680/685) with its A73+A53 combo that's essentially the same since the days of SDM660. At this day and age, Snapdragon 6 series should've been a cut-down Snapdragon 7 chip of the latest gen (i.e "SD 6 Gen 2" = cut down SD 7 Gen 1). Basic SoC designs can be relegated to Snapdragon 4 series or heck, the Qualcomm 2 series (remember Snapdragon 210?)

I hope they ditch 32-bit cores and bring 64-bit only design.

Oki, 28 Apr 2023It seems Qualcomm only cares about their flagship processor... moreI'm really curious how 6 Gen series performs, but true not even a hint of use yet, i guess for now, I'm thinking that Qualcomm is waiting for the right time to enter the budget range again since it's been bombarded by the same QSD 695 which personally, is a good budget Soc but it's old and 6 Gen series is the way to go

i would be also curious if they made a cpu in picometer process.

Then why was the SD8 + Gen 1 which was produced by TSMC so much better? It was essentially an overclocked version of the same chip only produced by TSMC, yet it's power efficiency was way better than the Samsung version.

What! Only 2 efficient cores. For those 4000 mah battery in vanilla flagship Smartphone won't last.

The A710 cores were remarkably inefficient compared to A78.
Samsung node just compounded everything and made it even worse, but even with TMSC those chips would have suffered.
