The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra bill of materials estimated at $469

31 May 2023
Most of that goes to Qualcomm and Samsung with the Snapdragon chipset and cellular connectivity parts being particularly pricey.

So it's getting cheaper and cheaper for manufacturers to make the phones (BoM cost going down) yet consumers pay more and more. And there's people on this site that actually defend these phones costing $1,500. I know the BoM isn't the only expense, but there's no justification for the threefold price increase

Ever since Huawei stopped making their kirin chipsets competition is at an all time low. Hopefully Huawei have something brewing for the future to keep costs down for us all.

And the less competition for Qualcomm.. the more they raise the cost of their chips.. and the more we will pay for phones. Think about that the next time you want to go mad for the newest snapdragon! 👍

Using last gens chip does not make it any more appealing (and also eliminates it from being called flagship). A Pixel 7 is a flagship because it uses the same chip as the Pro and if you have an S23 and your UI lags, there's something wrong with your phone. The iPhone 14 at what it currently costs is a bad joke, terrible value, ESPECIALLY if you live in Europe. If you just want a good but basic phone, there are multiple choices in the Android universe for half the cost that do the job just as well if not better. Apple need to make the non-Pro models cheaper to fit the specs, it would be a win-win for them, cause they can keep recycling last years junk for it and save on development cost while raking in a ton of new customers :)

You can see why they removed SD card.

BOM for 1TB flash is like $30. But you have to spend $400 to upgrade from 256 GB to 1TB.

SD card is NEVER coming back. Headphone jack is NEVER coming back. Bringing them back means losing BILLIONS in profit.

Rosso, 31 May 2023Worth pointing out, just because materials cost that much, ... moreYeah about 98% of people here dont realise this. Its like adding microsd and headphone jack, they don't realise how much it actually costs just adding them features on tens of millions of devices. It costs tens of millions and thats not including paying their workers, factory costs, R&D etc.

They have to make money/profit back so its why all these flagships now cost over £1000 and the likes of xperia 1 and RoG phone cost more than other flagships and chinese brands selling for higher prices (only in europe btw, everywhere else they are generally about 20% cheaper than equivalent iphone or galaxy phone or even pixel now).

Worth pointing out, just because materials cost that much, it doesn't mean Samsung is here making like 600+ euros per phone.

Engineering cost, cost of production, marketing, software development that lasts years, and other things also contribute to the overall cost.

It would be interesting to see analysis if possible of all of that as well, so we know how much they really make per phone, my guess would be like 10-25%, but who knows, it could be more.

Anonymous, 31 May 2023iPhone 14 non-Pro is FAR from a proper flagship.Apart from 60 Hz and no lossless zoom (which will change with iPhone 15 as it will get 48 MP), I don’t see any issue. One could just as well say „Pixel 7 is not a proper flagship because its chipset is worse“ or „Galaxy S23 is not a proper flagship because of its laggy UI“. No phone is perfect.

They need to pay the factory staff salary somehow. Of course there are decent amount of mark-up. If I work there I better be getting paid a lot. You working people understand better than anyone how it feels to be underpaid. Developers, technicians, researchers etc. They all want to get their labor worth. Samsung also need to pay the bill. The factory, the hq, office buildings, etc. Not gonna power itself up. Think logically before you think their phone is overpriced. There are so many new company that tried to make their own phone just to prove a point it can be cheaper, but they all flop. They eventually couldn't cover the cost.
