It's only turbo nerds like us that think we NEED so many OS updates, most people genuinely don't care. If their phone gets a software update with new features, they would think the new features are cool for like a seconds and go back to using it as normal lol

I'm only considering LCD smartphones. I hope Sony could still offer flicker-free/flicker-less (25khz+ pwm).

You can see these very heavy phones are very wide (7,5-7,8mm).
This adds weight compared to narrower/taller form.

Funny how media calls xperia tall display when it has about 14,9 cm.
Screen of S23u is probably near 16cm.

5iv was risked of being canceled last year.
1 has higher margin than 5 surely.

Downgrading is way to make ppl more interested in the phone $1400 than $100.
Just like Samsung does to S/S+ compared to Ultra.

Just read earlier on weibo Xiaomi is gonna make 14 Pro+ to sit between Pro and Ultra.
Expect 14/14 pro to have some cuts in favor of Pro+ and Ultra.

Android brands should make equal phone, like iphone 14 pro/pro max.
Just different size (pro should have pro max battery too 😒)

I was eagerly waiting for this phone and now they removed the telephoto? SONY?? WHY???
                What a dealbreaker!

Imagine not having a Telephoto lens on your phone in 2024 lol

Kangal, 24 Jul 2023If you read the API for Android, it scales Apps according t... moreI clearly know what Android's documents said. My point of view is that if an App cannot display correctly-and was uploaded to Play Store, especially in 2023, that's developer's fault for not implementing a reasonably responsive UI. I remember that responsive UI features was included in late 2016. No phone manufacturer of aspect ratio is to be blamed.

I use legacy apps myself, the oldest w/ target API level 22. In my collection of legacy apps w/ API>=25, I find no issue. For even older apps, my suggestion is to find a legacy 16:9 phone.

MRSTEK, 24 Jul 2023They've shot themselves in the feet last year by choos... moreThey have to use Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. 5 Series must not overpower 1 series. Thats their highest flagship besides the Pro series.

Wish the Lens go 16-24mm, 24-70mm. That will be great!

They've shot themselves in the feet last year by choosing to use 8 Gen1 to power Xperia 5 IV(not to outshine 1 IV). This year, again they'd remove telephoto. Interesting, even their 10 series retains a dedicated telephoto...
Now with discounts, S23 seems to be a better deal if you really want compact smartphones.

MRSTEK, 24 Jul 2023Name one phone that cannot display games or apps with prope... moreIf you read the API for Android, it scales Apps according to the DPI settings and Size settings. For most Apps this works well. There are still thousands of legacy Apps which are not updated, but you can still run them on the latest OS version. In those cases, you either get letter-boxing, or you can get a stretched view.

The first "weird" phone I had was the LG G6, and it suffered from that problem. Luckily the engineers at LG anticipated this, and there was a feature to allow the user to zoom in/out from the aspect ratio. Most current phones lack this feature, they believe that problem doesn't exist.

My point was, on a 18:9 phone it is halfway close to 16:9 so you get distortion/stretching, but since 21:9 is too far, you don't get that issue. Instead it either scales the App correctly to the Ultrawide aspect ratio (this is native in Android since 6.0) or you get letter-boxing. Whatever the case, objectively speaking a 21:9 is superior to a 18:9 or 19:9 or 20:9 ratios. I wouldn't say it is superior to a 17:9 or 16:9 aspect ratios for phones.. Not to mention 15:9 or 16:10 ratios for laptops, or going further down to 15:10 and 12:9 which are more suitable for tablets.

I do have a bad feeling that 5 III is the device that plays the big role in Sony downgrading the 5 series afterwards. I think, this's when 5 III almost sabotaged and outshined the 1 III, despite 1 III upgrades from 1 II are more demanding, obvious, and prominent compared to 5 III from 5 II, as 1 III reviews in some sites were straightforward unpleasant (including here where it only got 4.0 stars) while 5 III were the opposite and better (got 4.4 stars here).

I think Sony did read those reviews and weren't pleasant with the outcome of 1 series being "lesser" than 5 series, considering 1 series is Sony's equivalent of S Ultra/iPhone Pro Max series and their Premium flagship offering (both in territory and spiritual successor of their own "Premium" lineup of the past), and Sony is betting a lot in 1 series as it is their cutting-edge model that introduces a lot of firsts in certain features compared to more safer approach of 5 series. Pro-I did came to save 1 III to encountered those unpleasantness, although it only did as much as it can due to being more niche and segmented. This is the same when S20 Ultra were "lesser" than S20+ in reviews, so Samsung made S21 Ultra way appealing while nerfed the S21+.

So starting with Mark IV, Sony did start widen the gap of 1 series and 5 series. Buffing the 1 series and nerfing the 5 series. They only gave the 1 IV the continuous optical telephoto zoom of 85-125mm, improving the 70-105mm variable optical zoom of 1 III, while 5 IV settled for 60mm fixed telephoto zoom instead its predecessor of variable optical zoom of 5 III. And this time, these were more obvious by 1 V keeping the optical telephoto zoom of 1 IV, while 5 V removed the telephoto altogether instead at least keeping the 60mm fixed zoom.

Not gonna lie, it's saddening to see this happens, considering 5 series can be considered as Xperia Compact spiritual successor and its spirit is to keep 1 series features but in smaller scale and changing for something necessary. I just hope the rest great features that inherit from 1 V and 5 IV are being keep (S-Cinetone, MicroSDXC slot) when the telephoto had to say farewell from 5 series.

I'm not sure about this...dual cam is quite the downgrade; especially when the 10 V has a telephoto lens.

Could they possibly borrow the tech used for Periscope to have both a main lens and then secondary zoom lens in the same module? I'm not savvy in this but that would be a technical marvel to squeeze more camera lenses into less modules.

ghenceaRO, 24 Jul 2023they don't give up that 21:9 ratio no matter what :)Better than Samsung and their weird 19:9 aspect ratio.
At least when watching videos of Ultrawide content, it looks right on the Xperia. And at least when playing games or Apps, which were originally 16:9, on the Sony they have an expanded field of view. Other phones sometimes stretch the image.

                                    I would honestly prefer to get 21:9 or 16:9, I don't want anything in-between.
If I HAD to compromise, I would choose 17:9, and use that slightly extra length to curve the corners and to stick the speakers/cameras in. That way the "notch" is not actually intrusive because you still get a clean 16:9 image in the middle. And while I do like the 21:9 concept it either makes the phone too narrow, or you make it wider but now the top gets a little too long. It feels great in the hand either way, but becomes problematic when the edges stick out of your pockets.
