Weekly poll results: most agree that Apple switching to USB-C is an improvement

Though people are worried about Apple restricting the functionality of cables that aren't MFi certified.

Apple does NOT want to standardize. Having a separate, proprietary plug is just another way to force users to stay in the Apple ecosystem and milk more money out of them.

If Apple wanted to win the plug wars, all they had to do was open up the standard.

Kangal, 13 Aug 2023In a better timeline, Apple would have released the Lightni... moreThat timeline is our timeline. Apple already had lightning with USB 3 speed and USB-PD charging. All recent iPhones have USB-PD fast charging over lightning. iPad Pro 10.5 has USB3 over lightning. So lightning as a connector is not the limitation, it’s simply Apple not using USB3 controller on iPhones.

The question is why? Well, I don’t think Apple was caught off guard by the EU. I believe Apple already has a plan for USB-C all salong, considering they switched all iPads to USB-C. But they realize there are more people on iPhones, and to keep them upgrading, having the same cable makes the upgrade decision more frictionless. It’s the same reason some low end Androids are still using micro-USB. Regular consumers often feel annoyed if the new device they upgrade to need a new cable, especially when they already have the old cables for many other accessories.

blue, 13 Aug 2023No, EU only ordered using one type of a connector. Whatever... moreNot quite true, they do have to use USB-PD for charging, and if they support a proprietary charging standard for a certain wattage, then they have to support USB-PD up to the same wattage or 100 watts, whichever is less. They can engage in shenanigans like reduced data speeds, or other proprietary BS, but they can't muck around with charging.

Somehow here in the US, the number of people I know who bought a vanilla 14 over a vanilla 13 when they are literally the same exact phone makes me question humanity. I mean there’s software support since it’s a year newer maybe, but still…

And I really hope Apple doesn’t pull any MFi nonsense with USB-C. Otherwise honestly, making Apple use USB-C won’t have much of an effect… we will still have to use specific cables for iPhone. I guess it depends on how much Apple will regulate it…

I am glad EU do the right thing for the industry. Apple is known for creating proprietary with no benefits and value as compare to USB-c that is industry standard. Basically asking apple consumers to pay more . Also creating electronic waste for having a proprietary lighting cable.

In a better timeline, Apple would have released the Lightning Port with the USB 3.0 spec level. Which would have enabled faster charging, faster connections, and extra feature-set. And as a response, the USB Consortium would have released the Type-C connection also with a 3.0 base level specification.

So we would have all these cheap and midrange Android Phones, who would either resort to using USB 2.0 and be stuck on the old microUSB port.... or they would actually have to upgrade and go with USB 3.0 to get the Type-C port. Meanwhile, Apple's iOS devices would have aged much better, in particular, their iPads and MacBooks which get (4K/60Hz) microHDMI out functionality through the Lightning Port. The EU Commission is lighter on Apple's case, and thus we see both sides happy.

Eventually, we see Apple lead the industry and they are the ones to set the scene for USB 4.0 which uses a newer stronger connector than DisplayPort, HDMI, USB-C, and Lightning.... and it gets far higher charging rates of +100W, much greater connectivity speeds almost Pcie-like, and allows 240Hz, VRR, 8K, and 12-bit Dolby Vision-Atmos.

....but that's all in the best timeline, we are living in one of the darker timelines :'(

Whatever Apple limits on the port side, is purely up to them. They can limit charging speed, data transfer speed, they can limit audio or video output, they can even require MFi. And still it will be USB-C.

Using USB-C for all devices is a good thing. Forcing any manufacturer on the other hand is not.
