Anonymous, 13 Sep 202315/15+ can do 24MP. And again, SoC does not boost sensor ... more1) Your source: Trust me bro
2) Apple's 48MP mode isn't a single-frame capture, it indeed stacks frames. A similar behaviour can be observed on devices from other brands (e.g. Samsung) too, just shoot in RAW and then in full resolution JPEG to see how much shadow boosting and/or highlight recovery has been made on the latter.
3) 12/14/16-bit dng files that were created by combining multiple 10-bit RAW frames have more granular tonality and better exposure latitude than a single frame 10-bit RAW file. That's just how it is.
With advancements in image stacking and demosaicing algorithms, it's safe to say that the gap in quality between Quad Bayer and regular Bayer sensors is rapidly closing in. DJI Mavic 3 Pro's 48MP Quad Bayer RAW images processed in DxO Photolab look very much indistinguishable from a Bayer 48MP photo, and iPhone 14 Pro's 48MP ProRAW manages to resolve GSMArena's balcony pattern very well. The point I'm making isn't that Quad Bayer will be 100% on par with Bayer in terms of resolution, but rather, they will be so close in terms of perceived resolution to the point that they are virtually indistinguishable from each other in real life.
"You only say this because huawei was first interested in this tech"
More like Huawei showed the rest of the industry how to properly utilise Quad Bayer's full-resolution mode. The fact that the centre 12MP crop from the AI Ultra Clarity 48MP mode on Honor View 20 from 2018 looked a lot better than a 2x zoom from Xperia 5 V says all lol.

For me, What I need is a phone's camera that can produce all good (i.e the best) photos constantly day and night. Not sometime good, sometime bad. And the bonus is I can use it for years.......

Anonymous, 13 Sep 2023Simple explanation to everyone, because someone is unable t... more"worse than this is the request to do it using DNG"
No. Multi frame stacking often already happens with the pure raw sensor data. Manufacturers like Google don't convert the data to jpgs and then stack them. Already the Google Nexus 5 from 2013 stacked 10 raw files in its HDR+ On mode in order to produce an HDR+ jpg.
"Gsmarena mention for S23u that 200 and 50MP have weaker DR than 12.5MP. Why? Because they are single frame exposure."
There may be fewer frames and there is also more read noise per frame.
"This is one of few reasons nobody is trying to do what Nokia 808 was. High resolution bayer."
One of the main reasons is that the high resolution modes have more read noise than the low resolution modes. The advantage of Quad Bayer is basically having two cameras in one camera.
Nowadays there are several phones which don't simply upscale, but do use the high resolution mode at for example 2x.

Simple explanation to everyone, because someone is unable to learn or does not want to.
When sensor maker (Samsung Semi, Sony Semi , Omnivision, GalaxyCore) says sensor has N miliseconds readout at X resolution , M stops of dynamic range and XX bits ADC, does not matter if phone has Helio A22 or Qualcomm 8g2. These values cannot be overcome. Software tricks will not boost its capabilities either.
Pixel and Galaxy S are the phones with highest number of frames used for HDR. Barely above 10 frames to overlap each other.
This is done while using JPEG (there are always 8bit, no DNG for HDR) , at 12.5MP . Files that are about 4-4,5MB each.
Then comes the person that year after year , insists that is possible (also demands OEMs to offer) same frame stacking at 48/50/64/108/200MP when each frame would take at least 3x more time to be fully read at sensor , worse than this is the request to do it using DNG when DNG from 12MP camera is 6x larger file compared to JPEG, now imagine that DNG from 60MP can be over 80MB (imagine size of 200MP DNG).
But does not matter how many times I explain that processor and storage cannot make this process any faster. ISP does its job when data has already left sensor.
Sensor that can read 12MP in 15ms and 48MP in 40ms, is going to do same no matter if SoC is Helio A22 or Qualcomm 8g2, no matter if storage is emmc 5.0 or ufs4.0.
Google blacks high res because of this.
Xperia blocks high res because of this. Same ppl that made xperia cam also blacked 48MP mode on Alpha A7s3.
Gsmarena mention for S23u that 200 and 50MP have weaker DR than 12.5MP. Why? Because they are single frame exposure.
Now, if phone can barely use 10-12 frames at 12.5MP jpeg. How can they do same for 50MP jpeg or even DNG when this process would be 3, 4, 6, 10x slower?
I have provided evidence, but still was not enough. Dont waste time trying same.
This is one of few reasons nobody is trying to do what Nokia 808 was. High resolution bayer. Nobody will.

Funny part is fact he thinks 50 MP bayer would be crap for cell phone because of sensor size, but considers amazing the 50MP from QB sensors with same size he criticizes when these are just upscaled as gsmarena has said 10000x times.

Speaking of price, "iphones have become cheaper and cheaper in recent years"? Not here anyway. In fact, the iPhones over here are getting more and more expensive.
P.S. There's still no official price of the Xperia 5 Mk5 here in Malaysia, hence why I'm using last year's Mk4 model for price comparison over the 15 Pro.

I just checked the price for the new iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max here in Malaysia. Interestingly, the 15 Pro Max 256GB doesn't cost $1,199. It actually cost $1,399 (MYR 6,499), which is almost the same price as the Sony Xperia 1 Mk5 256GB here (MYR 6,399). As for the 15 Pro, the 128GB version cost $1,179 (MYR 5,499), which is $130 more than the Sony Xperia 5 Mk4 256GB (MYR 4,899). If I spec the 15 Pro at 256GB (MYR 5,999), it ends up costing an extra $235.
Small wonder why my professional photographer friend who has been a long-time iPhone user suddenly made the switch to the latest Sony Xperia 1 Mk5 after he terminated his iPhone 14 Pro Max carrier contract. He anticipated that the new iPhone will be more expensive than before, and he's right all along.

Solid upgrade but the action button is pretty weak. It's only do one app at a time and for now it's only a couple of apps running. But you can't launch multiple apps per action nor have it do double presss or triple press option. It's the weakest of the "upgrades".
Once you're used too more functions you don't go back.
