Apple A17 Pro chipset appears on Geekbench, performance cores clocked at 3.78GHz

14 September 2023
The A17 Pro holds a 16% single-core score and a 13% multi-core lead over last year's A16 Bionic.

The new node jump comes with around a +30% increase to performance. So something is very concerning here. Not to mention Apple has been on the same architecture family for a while now. The A16 is little more than an overclocked A15, which is a refinement of A14, and that is fairly closely related to the A13.

I am starting to suspect that Apple changed their plan. Instead of the usual Process, Architecture, Optimisation model that they adopted, I think they may be changing it. It's possible they used the node advancement to make the chips smaller (cheaper for Apple), added more coprocessors (AI and iGPU) to remain relavent, and targetted efficiency rather than performance.

If we think about it, this makes sense. Apple may have reduced the batteries in the 15 Pro and 15 Max by around 20% to make the handsets weigh much less weight. They counterbalanced this with using more efficient processor. Then they marketed how "light" the new phones are, and falsely attributed these to the Titanium Housing.

I dunno.... we will have to wait for deep dives and reviews. Professional teardowns, weighing of those components, and deep dives from Juan Bagnell, Golden Reviewer, Geekerwan, and Andrei Frumusanu. Do NOT listen to those shallow impressions from the likes of MKBHD, Linux Tech Tips, Unbox Therapy, Austin Evans, iJustine, etc etc.

Apple CPU'S Power are only to be seen on Applebench™

Then, AnTuTu Will give the lead for the old* 4nm Sd8 gen 3 and May be gen 2 on battery and performance

Excuse me, why iphone 15 Pro scores are better than max? Pro is more powerful than max?

If TSMC declares a 52% increase in transistor density, this runs ~300mhz faster than the previous gen. Then where the heck are the rest put? I get that the GPU and NPU equivalent, memory logic and probably something else got it's fair share, but this seems like a lot of wasted potential. Super secret FBI/CIA/KGB/CCP spying SoC maybe? Something smells fishy and it ain't the wet tyres outside.

10% improvement in performance is pretty disappointing. The process node upgrade alone should have given the A17 a 10% bump

This time I'm more interested in GPU benchmarks. Sustained performance also.

J and older A series were extremely underpowered (take the A51 or the J7 for example). Both the Exynos 9611 and the 7870 which were their star mid-range chipsets were behind the competition. Then in 2021 they used Mediatek for their lower-end series, and pretty slow ones too
