Phantom Ensemble, 10 Oct 2023Here in the US, iPhones are stereotyped to be the superior ... moreThis. I’m American too.

I see a good amount of intentionally laggy “android users be like” memes sometimes. I’ve even seen memes where someone dropping their phone and the battery popping out is apparently funny:

I think you can’t even properly be in some JOBS in the US without having an iPhone since companies use them for work apps since iPhones are dominant in the US.

When it comes to Androids vs iPhones in the US it’s almost as divisive as MPH vs KMH.

As probably the first American to log on this morning, I'm going to give a two part explanation as to why this is still a problem:

Part 1 is that Apple is a majority of the smartphone market (54%), and approaches a monopoly among the younger demographics (87% of teenagers for example). And as a few people have already mentioned, there is a stigma in many groups against having an Android phone. As a result, many group chats will be comprised entirely of iPhone users, so there'll be no reason to use a third party app when native iMessage will work. And for those who don't, in the words of Tim Cook, you're supposed to just, "Get an iPhone."

Part 2 is that even if everyone agreed to install third party messaging apps, there is no consensus on which app to use. In virtually every country, there is a single app that everyone uses (Telegram is big in the former Soviet Union, WeChat in China, Line in Japan, Kakao in South Korea, WhatsApp for most of the world.) But in the US there was never any reason to switch to a messaging app early on, because SMS was free or cheap, while mobile data read comparatively expensive, while most of the rest of the world had the opposite. So in the US, people stayed on SMS, and then iPhone users got iMessage on top of that. And because we never went through that middle phase, we have no consensus on which app(s) to use. In fact, WhatsApp and Telegram have sketchy reputations here, while most people have no clue what Signal is. And even though many people do have WhatsApp or another app installed, they exclusively use it for international communication.

So what is the solution to this? Short of some mass deprogramming of the Cult of Apple, I'd suggest an FCC regulation requiring all mobile phones that support future frequencies to support RCS communication. This would not be dissimilar to when they required that phones with LTE Band 13 be sold unlocked (to force Verizon to sell unlocked phones, which they did), and would have the advantage of forcing Apple to comply in the US, instead of software locking features to the EU.

DBS, 10 Oct 2023We don't live in 2005 in Europe. We don't use tex... moreRCS is not outdated or obsolete technology.

I buy new android phone and google message say that it's unsupported device for RCS. So I think Apple know what to do. Sms must continue and regular messengers in parallel.

autocascading, 10 Oct 2023The EU will simply decide this and Apple will comply. We don't live in 2005 in Europe. We don't use texting. Everyone here uses Telegram or WhatsApp.

So no, the EU will not step in here simply because this isn't an issue in Europe. This is an American-only problem. And one that Americans could solve themselves very quickly by leaving 2005 behind and joining the rest of the World in adopting instant messaging rather than outdated SMS/RCS protocols.

All phones companies should ignore Apple like it doesn't exist. In all matters .
                                  Instead of copying features.

let OS' compete with each other. whatsapp is already the mainstream messaging platform with almost 3 billion active users. no need to use OS restricted apps.
