For anyone who has ever wondered if your phone is safe from hacking when turned off, we all now have the answer. Yes they can!

Get yourselves an old Nokia where you can take out the sim and the battery. Only way to be sure.

Glad (most) people (here) are reacting with the very much appropriate terror and/or skepticism to this.

They are essentially creating the wireless equivalent of breaking encryption. All the arguments Apple made against breaking/backdoor-ing encryption (e.g. for chats) when requested by Agencies, (and that was one of the few things I appreciate Apple for), well, those arguments also exactly apply here. Beyond bad that Apple didn't act accordingly here

So in the future your phone won't be save even when it is deactivated.
Any hacker could misuse this backdoor, as if Apple hadn't implemented enough back doors in the past.

Moreover, why do companies focus on bullshit things instead of things that customers care about? iPhones are overheating and the answer is a pad-like device that updates your phone before you even get to see it.

Am I the only one to to realised that this "new in-store device" will be all that I will ever need to "acquire" to be able to wireless hack any modern iPhones?
It will have the ability to turn on iphones, turn off iphones, update firmware.. Everything needed to inject ANYTHING into the system of any iPhone regardless of their willingness.

I could imagine that they can turn it on via a code sent as a strong NFC signal to the NFC chip.
Then run the update code with auto turn off embedded in the code.
