This is making Nvi... moreI could tolerate that if the base configuration is already representative of the great performance for most, not under-specced where you will always need to upgrade to actually get the spec appropriate for the time. BTO upgrades should be available for those needing more or in niche use case. Profiting from those niche uses is kinda understandable. They're less volume, thus justifying higher price.

But today's Apple is just the worst. The base config is practically not going to sustain the lifecycle of the device itself. Worse, Apple is cutting corners with neutered SSDs on the base M2 models. Today's Apple literally force you to upgrade to actually get a machine that performs as advertised and is proper for today's computing tasks, focusing on squeezing as much money from customers either now or in the future.

I feel sorry for the Apple Silicon team. They have made some of the best silicon to date, yet marketing practically neuter their achievements by pairing the base models, which are going to be the model bought by most consumers, with miniscule RAM and neutered SSD. In a few years, most people will feel their machines to be inadequate and buy newer macs despite the silicon is more than enough.

I can barely install more than 5 AAA games without bottling the storage, not to talk about ram. I agree Macs have very good optimisation, but c'mon. $1600 and I have already filled up the storage with just 5 applications

Are they marking 12GB of RAM up to $500? This is making Nvidia's ridiculous $100 for 8GB VRAM look tame. Apple is the king of markups.

I'm fine with 8GB ram, even with using Parallels Desktop and Windows based autocad. But if you can strech your budget a bit, get the 16GB ram version.

Why are they charging $1600 for the 8GB when they could have obviously improved the hardware by adding at 4 — 8GB more? For that price buyers cannot install any more ram, rendering the PC useless in the long run (when ram bottlenecks and hardware begind to age)

In fact, 8GB RAM models are frequently using the SSD for swap, ruining the SSD faster as well. In short, it’s all an attempt to force consumers to upgrade sooner in the future.
