          They are likely using a Linux kernel, maybe even AOSP kernel, and fooling around with a new execution environment for apps. Maybe even switching to a native ARM app environment without a byte code intermediate stage. Although it would become a problem if RISC-V takes off.

You must have meant "grass roots support" and not "root support", because Huawei (unlike Xiaomi or others) doesn't allow bootloader unlock or root support on their phones since 2019. Which strikes me as quite authoritarian and controlling. Which was when I decided I will never buy another phone from them, here in the "Global South".

                  Besides you'll only pry YouTube and Google Sheets mobile clients from my cold, dead hands. Tablets maybe, just because they can render the desktop layouts.

                    I didn't believe it from the first time that Harmony OS isn't based on AOSP. It was just their claim. It's still based on AOSP with the support of Android Apps as the evidence.

                    Its super interesting that they will somehow create an entirely new OS from scratch. Even Google Stadia is nowhere near to Android / Linux kernel.

                                      It also has mandatory security check so sometime even if you succeed on installing the APK, it will be immediately uninstalled because of "security concern".

                                        As others have said, this can only be good news for us consumers because it means Google & Apple will feel the pressure to compete and actually develop their OSes.

                                        Not to mention that HarmonyOS runs not just on phones, but all sorts of smaller electronics as well, and their integration is almost amazing because you can switch so seamlessly from one to the other.
