                If you're talking about ubuntu touch and the likes, they never had 'tried'.
                They are short in the money and there are no OEM that works with them. In fact Canonical, the company behind desktop ubuntu ditched the project and UBports picked it up because of the lack of interest by OEM leads to needs of creating custom driver and not all manufacturer have their door open to community effort, in which case they need to reverse engineer it.

                If an OEM is serious about building a mobile linux distro, it will surely take off, because every single hardware performs better in linux, some 10-15% performance uplift.

                As for 3rd-party apps, it's not hard at all, as I said before android is literally linux, the porting process is easy.
                And if developers don't port their apps, it's not that hard either, we already have waydroid and anbox.
                We can also run windows programs via wine or proton.
                We can even run amd64 (x86) via box86/64 or hangover.
