It depends on the brand, on some brands, 8gb will perform like 6gb ram or worse sometimes. 4gb is the minimum for light usage, just browsing social media, and perhaps few tabs on chrome, assuming ram management is good. 6gb is the sweet spot if you're a heavy user on a budget. 8gb is the safe zone for many years to come. Unless some heavy features get implemented in future android versions. I am happy with 8gb of ram, at times i could open 45 chrome tabs without a single tab reloading, i could have a heavy game on the background, with several chrome tabs open, have different social media apps open and without any realods of apps. My phone is infinix ans it has very good ram management. The same isn't possible on brands like realme or oneplusone.

I buy the upgraded version of a device given that the price is not too much.

Smartphones on low/mid should start at 6gb/128(example Samsung A34/Redmi note 11/12/13)
From mid and up 8gb/128 should be the minimum(example Samsung A54/Oneplus Nord 3)
More expensive phones/cheaper flagships like base S23 or Pixel 8 should start with 8/256gb storage
For the most expensive flagships 12/256 should be the base version(Galaxy S24 Ultra, Pixel 9 pro etc).

Considering we've reached a plateau in performance, 8GB on a phone is enough for most people and probably still "future-proof" enough. I'm using a 4 year old phone with 6GB of RAM and I haven't had any RAM issues yet. People who complain about this sort of thing usually have like 60 apps open all the time so of course they're gonna notice when an app refreshes...

Anonymous, 03 Dec 2023RAM in phones is overrated, 8GB is enough.RAM is literally jargon....
Which means it's something only known by the vocal minority
There is no way it is overrated

Since ram is cheap and it helps a lot should be fine to have at least 64GB, 24 is way too low to be honest.
With more ra and more free ram even a slow CPU on a weaker phone can preform like a king.

12GB for flagships in 2024 should be the minimum. All the current 8GB RAM flagships keep closing background apps.

For this current time of the phone generation. 12gb is enough, 8 starts closing apps frequently. And don't even start with 6gb, you better hope the 3rd app doesn't auto close.
Virtual ram is only useful in PC's, on phones it makes no difference while making it slightly slower because it starts relying more on storage as RAM.

"You won’t get more than 12GB out of Samsung or Google, Apple won’t even go that far and the iPhone 15 Pro Max has 8GB of RAM"
There you go, this is current maximum that phones can reasonably use. 24 GB really doesn't serve any purpose other than flexing on your friends in high school.

The wording is kinda confusing. If you are asking me, how much is *enough* I would think about the bare minimum where it's not noticeable at all.
I am a little confused to see such high ranges and some comments here. I would go for 4-6 since from 3 and below it is quite noticeable.

I'd say 8GB RAM is enough, but an additional 4GB can still help, any more than that is just good for marketing. However virtual RAM is terrible, it doesn't help, it's only harmful.

There was a time when 2mb speed was considered fast....
So by that observation there is never enough ram as progress is inevitable

6GB is the bare minimum, 8GB is good, 12GB is great, and anything more is overkill.
I was using a Motorola with 3GB of RAM until a few months ago. Was an awful experience, especially combined with the eMMC 5.1 and Helio G25 (8x Cortex-A53) CPU.

12gb should be more than sufficient for 99% of mobile phones user who are not gamers.
By comparison, average pc purchased nowadays have 16gb or
PlayStation 5 has 16gb ram, why would you need a phone that needs more ram than these machines, unless the phone can't manage ram very good (example xbox one with original 8gb has 3 os which eats up the ram and less efficient for its main purpose)
