The next Sony Xperia Pro is rumored to have a rotating camera ring

18 December 2023
The ring will give you manual control over zoom, aperture and focus, just like on a real camera.

They should separate the pro series for actual photographers and make the flagships more mainstream with a better auto mode

Sony phones with a good auto mode? Is that the deal now? Just a year ago everyone was saying that Sony phones are meant for manual control.

Yeah, you could get better photos on the Xperia in manual mode but the image quality was still unusable.

I use a7RIII and I had an Xperia 1 III for the 2 years it worked. The Xperia was absolutely useless as a phone, as a personal computer, as a video recorder, and as a camera. To give Xperias the 'alpha' brand is an insult to the amazing alpha cameras.

why not just focus on the camera instead of Phone. Phone should be phone just should have decent camera should be good enough.

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2023Plastic will never properly replace glass. You dont see pl... moreSome of Canon's newer lenses have moulded plastic elements. RF 28mm F2.8 uses 3 of them and it's optically excellent, it's very sharp across the frame, and unlike many other lenses that use aspherical elements, the bokeh is surprisingly smooth too. The downside is that the lens does not feature an internal focusing design and shows pretty strong distortion, but these are compromises that had to be made in order to keep it incredibly thin and lightweight.

Also, many eyeglasses (not for protection, but for correcting eyesight) nowadays use plastic because they do their job just fine and they don't get shattered when shock is applied. In fact, all of my glasses have plastic lenses.

TheLastOracle, 18 Dec 2023I agree. The problem is that glass elements doing the same ... moreSmartphone manufacturers may need to start considering using more glass elements for improved flare resistance, but plastic definitely has its own advantages.

For example: Canon's RF 28mm F2.8 lens uses a trio of very large moulded aspherical plastic elements (Called "Seagull lenses"), but it has a very commendable optical performance given its size, and the extensive use of plastic allowed them to make the whole lens light and compact while keeping the cost low at the same time.

Also, good anti-reflection coating like Zeiss T* coating on Vivo's flagship phones also helps.

This is a funny statement coming from a person who doesn't believe in DxOMark, owned by the company that makes pro-grade photo editing software, releases custom correction profiles for hundreds of lenses, measures the sensor dynamic range of camera bodies and literally has a dedicated lab to test the smartphone cameras/audio/displays.

Sony makes great sensors, great lenses, great phone hardware. And yet, images from their phones always look like garbage.

Their software is terrible. And they only provide 1 or 2 years of updates. That does not cut it in the modern world. They need to replace their whole software team. Should provide 5 years of updates, minimum. Camera algorithm and apps needs to be modernised. But people have been saying this for years, nothing ever changes.

By the way, if sony did not have patent for UDC in 2012, then no one would be using, since they would not have the idea to get .
Sony also has patent (2017) to use NFC as wireless charging. Let's see which OEM steals this idea first.

Auto and manual with exactly same iso and shutter speeds DO NOT give different results.
Texture, colours, noise etc ... All are going to be equal.

There is nothing wrong. As I have said, all other brands use HDR as default. Sony does not use.

Interesting the fact photographers like but ones that criticise are youtubers that can only repeat "details in the shadows".

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2023You don't get the point.I do. You think employees responsible for cameras do not like to see cameras associated with xperia, when they are the ones associating alpha with xperia.

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2023Plastic will never properly replace glass. You dont see pl... moreI agree. The problem is that glass elements doing the same work as plastic, in smartphones, would likelu make then much larger. Also, plastic elements also probably have issues with anti-reflection. It's probably high time that smartphones finally move away from cheap plastic lens elements. I agree, thatits also an economics of acale and costing thing. Using plastic lens elements us also mostly a costing issue. Maybe a plastic glass hybrid?

I also wondef if higher bit depth in both the pipeline (AD) and processing will help improve photos, saving some of the smearing happening due to multi frame HDR.

Smartphone companies should add few mms in thickness to their smartphones, if it helps improve image quality noticeably.
