potato4k, 09 Jan 2024You missed the point. Nobody bought a $6000 Pro Display XDR... moreAre you one of those people buying the $$$$ monitors (from any brand)? If not then don't talk like you know what those monitors are used for and equate it to this Apple HMD which is worthless for the quality of work the top end monitors are used for. No self respecting dev/designer/editor would buy any HMD solely to use for their entire workflow, right now the tech is just not available for VR/AR devices to mimic high-end monitors.

You would only buy the Vision Pro Gen1 for work...if you want to make content or programs that cater specifically to this device. And that too will be niche AH since Apple does not have the market penetration like M$FT, which can demand top dollar for their HoloLens that got wider use cases than what Apple's limited walled garden provides.

Just because Apple manages to sell their overpriced (IMHO) monitors is because of multiple factors like cultish brand loyalty, lack of widespread competition in product segment, seamlessness in walled garden connectivity and simply because Apple sell overpriced stuff to maintain their image of being a "premium" brand meant for those who can afford it. Without mindless coonsumerism sheep the whole idea of paying $5000+ for a basic handbag or $50000+ for a gaudy watch would fall apart like wet tissue. As a shareholder, sure you can push this spiel but as a customer don't do yourself a disservice by justifying this device's pricetag at this point in time.

justasmile, 09 Jan 2024And get a 'TV' strapped on your head. Just get a ... moreAgain, you're missing my point. People who are willing to spend $6000 for an Apple display are not the same customers as the Meta Quest. The former is who Apple is targeting, with a device at almost half the price, have larger display, can run on battery, and comes with an iPad Pro built in. To those people, the Vision Pro is a steal. And believe me, I can see many enterprises and companies would be interested in this.

This is where Meta and Apple differs. Meta is trying to get the casual people like you and me to buy a VR headset. Even at $500, for me, the meta quest is just an expensive toy as I have no use of it. That's why Apple is positioning the Vision Pro on its own category, targeting specific people with a price to match.

Would you buy a $5000 monitor where you have to spend another $1000 for the stand? Heck no. I wouldn't either. But there are people who did. And the fact that Apple keeps selling the Pro Display XDR means the volume is enough to justify the product. My take is the Vision Pro is in the same/similar segment here.

HyperionBurn, 09 Jan 2024but for 500 dollars you can get 90% of the apple vision pro... moreMissing the point. Apple never said the Vision Pro to be a smart glass nor a VR headset. So clearly Apple is not trying to convince people that the Vision Pro is a meta Quest competitor. Apple intentionally indicated that Vision Pro is a spatial computer. That alone should clue people that it's in its own category.

When the iPhone was launched, smartphone is not new. We already had Palm, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian in the smartphone field. And they're all cheaper with contract. Google Steve Ballmer's reaction to the original iPhone.

I already provided an example where the Vision Pro becomes a very feasible and more cost effective alternative to the Pro Display XDR. You have a larger display at almost half the cost, can run on battery, oh and it comes with an iPad Pro built inside it as well.

For me personally, both the Vision Pro AND the Meta quest are overpriced toys. Why? Because I don't have a use for them. But I can see where Apple is heading with the Vision Pro, and no, we are not the primary target. Right now, this is for particular niche professionals that are also the customers of $5000 display with $1000 stand.

potato4k, 09 Jan 2024Look at the original iPhone. It was $500 with contract. Oth... morebut for 500 dollars you can get 90% of the apple vision pro, the meta quest 3...

but here there's already smart glasses and vr headsets

But guess what, there are people buying those $6000 Pro Display XDR. For these segment, the Vision Pro becomes a much better deal.

For the rest of consumers like you and me, we don’t actually need this. That’s why most people here will continue failing to see the value of the product, because in reality we have no use of it.

Just a reminder that this device is the epitome of surveillance capitalism.
