LoneOwl, 15 Jan 2024It is way cheaper to replace your battery in 3-4 years and ... moreThat depends. I bought at some point a Galaxy S9, I think with around 180EUR (only for nostalgia purposes, lol). The phone had very bad battery so I was in some Apple/Samsung service to change the battery. The changing of the battery would have cost me 90EUR (including the work). That means half the price of the whole phone.
I just said No thank you, and sold the phone in short time with 120EUR. Sure, I lost 60EUR, but just saying how much is a battery replacement once the phone is aging and its value decreases a lot (especially Android phones). Battery value (including the work) doesn't decrease directly proportional with the phone, sadly.

Or, Samsung decides that S23 series is a god sender for themselves and keep the production going until 2027 or 2028, while keeping some features behind paywall.

Anonymous, 15 Jan 2024The problem with lengthy software updates is that no phone ... moreIt is way cheaper to replace your battery in 3-4 years and keep using your phone, than selling it and buying another.
And flagships have the hardware(screen,SoC,camera etc)to keep using them for more.

It's not just battery replacements it's also wear and tear and also screen burn which happens much sooner than 7 years

They can just do the Apple way, keeping older phones in production for the people who can't afford the main flagships. And by doing so they can safely discontinue the Samsung FE series.
And they'll definitely need to make sure there is availability of parts of this phone for repair for at least 5 years like Google.
Now the real question is: will s23 series get this support too?

NOK6600, 15 Jan 2024yes ..get 7 years os update and also quitely not admit it w... moreSony comes up with things but never executed them effectively sad thing is they got great hardware but poor software. Even the flagships get only 2 os upgrades but that's not the worst of it, they never bother to give the latest OS features to last gen models. If this generation (possibly rebooted) doesn't get improvement in the software front it would confirm sony doesn't make phones for the customer but to sit as a showpiece of 'camera tech craftmanship'

Anonymous, 15 Jan 2024You are not suppose to buy a new phone every year. The guy ... moreYeah, but we're reaching a point where there's basically little left to improve. So a guy with 4-5 year old phone will be just fine with the S24, especially since it'll get 7 years of software updates and especially since the S24 will basically be perfect. I mean, how much more, what other new hardware or feature could they bring to the S25 to make it a substantial upgrade over the S24? The S23 wasn't a big upgrade over the S22, and the same will happen with the S24 over the S23. That's why releasing the flagship series once every two years would be more beneficial at this point when there's isn't much more left to improve

I like software updates and I like this kind of info, but at this point is just becoming marketing strategy.
I mean after Google announced 7 years of updates for Pixel 8 series, is just too much of a coincidence that Samsung did something similar.
Also, who knows what will happen in 5 years, let alone 7 years. I mean, software can help an aging hardware, but not at infinite. Not to mention the battery, which will probably be changed 2 times in 7 years.
I don't know, but I will not base my future purchases only on these promises from one company or another.
Frequent updates and especially on time updates are more important than long lasting updates. So, Samsung and other companies, please don't keep us waiting 3-6 months until we receive the current Android OS version, after Google's release. Also, don't break the phone after a big update. This is more important than promise that you will give us 7 years long updates.

The problem with lengthy software updates is that no phone battery is going to last 7 years. Will they offer same day battery replacement no questions asked?
