Even in Iphones, many people upgrade in less than 3-4years, despite their longer software support, while others use them for longer.

S9 had 4gb of ram, S24 Ultra for example will have at least 12.

S9 had a small 3000mah battery for its QHD screen, S24+ and S24Ultra will have a 5000mah battery.....

Faster charging yes, and faster wireless, but not just that. Cameras as well, dual periscope, 1.0"-inch type sensors, bigger and higher resolution ultrawide, and telephoto cameras. (Yes, Samsung will now likely include a 50mp telephoto, so there is that.) Design is also important when choosing a smartphone, and it's just not a good look, when most Samsung phones, excluding the Ultra models, look the same as each other, but then ever since the S22 Ultra, those models look the same as other S Ultras. What happened to the Samsung who used to change everything? The S9 and the S10

It's also not just about the innovation, or lack thereof, but rather about giving anything, and everything in a phone that costs around/over 1000 USD, and the complete package of the phone coming with it's necessary/nice to have accessories. Yes it's not just Samsung being guilty here, there is also Sony, and Google and then there is Apple who started it all. The thing is, the other 3 didn't have to follow Apple, they choose to do so, for more profit. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Apple, they didn't have to start this trend, and they also did it for nothing, but profit. Anyways let's get Apple out of here, as they don't really have competition, if you want iOS that's the only way, in the Android space there are plenty of other options.

AnonD-1138975, 15 Jan 2024Depends. In my case, none of the people I know have phones ... moreProblem is your very limited view the world. You see a few people around you and think this behavior reflects the rest of the world but that couldn't be further from truth. For example in my circle people hold on to their phones for 4-6 years on average I would say. So a lot of people will get use of this 7 year update, more than you could image.

Also, I can't believe we even have to argue this and some people would be AGAINST pro-consumer moves. But hey, when we get user replacement batteries same people will be complaining about that as well. Most people are irrational and don't have sufficient critical thinking skills.

Samsung knows that their products are for poor people, so this 7 years is welcome for those who buys second hand with 2-3 years left of software updates

Good, 15 Jan 2024There are lots of people who don't upgrade every 1 or ... moreDepends. In my case, none of the people I know have phones older than 4 years. And that includes my 73 years old father. Phones bought from day 1 or let's say very short time after their release.
So, I don't think is that common.
And in the case of flagship phones is even more obvious, that people who buy this kind of models, tend to change them more often. Because this people are more interested in the latest designs, features, cameras, etc.
So, I stay behind my first comment, that this is more of a marketing scheme from companies. Up until now there are Google and Samsung. I am guessing more companies will follow now (with similar news), otherwise they will be seen as not good.

How many people will actually hold on to their S24 models for 7-8 years, just to see if Samsung fulfils their promise? Very few I am guessing.

You had the old sensor with native 10x zoom and anything above that was already cropping down on a small sensor, while now you have 5x native zoom + 10x lossless zoom plus (possibly - we'll see that when tests come out) capacity for good picture quality when further zooming in - and you call that a downgrade?

There are lots of people who don't upgrade every 1 or 2 years. I have S10 and it's still in great condition, not banged, screen perfect. The only thing wrong is that software updates stopped, which is of course planned obsolescence and hardware would be more than capable still supporting latest android for years to come. So 7 years of updates is excellent news for people like me who take care of their devices.

What other technology invented in China that nobody else has did they use to innovate as compared to complacent Samsung or Apple? Apple has their face recognition tech on a level far ahead of anyone else. Samsung patented its flexible display technology. What kind of innovation on that level are those ChMs supposedly packing - is my questions to the original poster who seems to be living on another planet.
