25 January 2024
NFC is also usable by alternative wallet apps, and WebKit is no longer required for browsers.

The browser choice is hilarious. Meanwhile Google can continue forcing OEMs to install Chrome if they want their Android devices GMS certified.

This is good news, back in the late 90s early 2000s everyone played absolute hell because Microsoft bundled their own browsers in software even though you were free to choose your own, and that browser didn’t have to run Microsoft’s code, they were find under antitrust laws I think, this with Apple is simply next level monopolies.
People pay a lot of money for these products and should be free to use them how they want.
If they choose to use the device outside of its official capabilities then the risk is on the user not Apple, but users should be able to have the choice rather then stonewalled.
And yes my entire ecosystem is Apple from MacBook Pro, watch, 15pro max AirPods Pro, iPad Pro M1, but still support less restrictive practices, especially from Apple who are the worst at it

Only useful thing out of this is that unsupported phones will still have access to modern browser engines to properly display websites. Currently, when an iPhone 5 is stuck on iOS 10, it is stuck with the WebKit version of iOS 10 that isn’t useful for pretty much any website in 2024. The rest of the changes are kind of whatever. I just hope this doesn’t mean we will get 1000 different app stores for 1000 different apps, like a Meta App Store and a Supercell App Store and so on. Like on desktop where there is Origin and Epic Games Store and so on

As an android user I don't understand why they're forcing some company for such change, their product their software, if you don't like it buy something else.
I can dig the type-C regulations since we're talking about cables and hardware, but diving deep through the software and force changes is a bit stupid to me.
At the end all software will become alike and there will be no difference.

EU doesn’t do this for consumers benefit. But for their own. So they can fine at will.
This is bad. And the EU has become a corrupt criminal organisation of degenerate old men.
