Good riddance, now at least people will know that they are buying HMD, not Nokia. HMD destroyed Nokia's legacy.

pl2rts, 01 Feb 2024They cant even make good spec phones that are unique to the... moreXiaomi didn't start from scratch. It was promoted as an alternative to the then fan-loved Samsung and Apple devices, and the key people were a stable set of people in both investing towards the brand, had a consumer-oriented marketing strategy, worked on a competitive pricing strategy while spending approximately 3 years to make their first ever product from the brand launch date and it worked well for them.
Nokia mobile's startup was an entire different story. They were a company developed from the mobile business acquired by Microsoft from Nokia. There was a huge loss in selling the business from Microsoft to the current key people of Nokia mobile/HMD.
Even today, the licensing amount is yet undisclosed, meaning it was likely less profitable for Nokia mobile to use the Nokia branding.
There were numerous cases of Nokia phones being sold through flash sales and prices dropping significantly after a few months of release (especially in India with an ultra-competitive mobile market). Add Nokia's poor management of licensees to the combination, and you get to see this Pandora's box. Also, they had zero experience in the post-2015 mobile market of cheapening hardware costs and ODM-based designs, considering how they only manifested their startup within 5 months or less.
Having a loyal fanbase doesn't mean that they have a good target market, owing to turbulent brand histories. You'll understand that from brands such as Panasonic, Blackberry and HTC, where they had a fan following from their products, and barely survived after not keeping consistent with their target market. They either had hardware issues, supply chain issues etc
In the end, Nokia mobile suffered from what their parent company used to suffer from. Lack of viable resources to make devices consistently (unlike Motorola/Lenovo) and caring key people, lack of knowledge of consumer interests (consumers pay attention to the chipset brandings and bigger numbers due to the vocal minority that includes us), not understanding the consistent dumping of e-waste from people (people are most likely to dump their phones every once in a while, instead of keeping them for longer), lack of marketing due to their inability to invest, Nokia's flawed licensee management and lack of brand awareness.

Minu, 01 Feb 2024They existed in the wrong time.
With a limited number of r... moreThey cant even make good spec phones that are unique to the branding so where will the money come when they lose customers with each new phone they release ?
Everything was low end budget to low end middle class with prices of low end middle class to high end middle class. HMD on Nokia branding 350 euro phone 6 years ago had specs same as Redmi Note 5 Pro that was 170 euro.
Microsoft with Windows Phone was a good platform where even bottom of the line phones run smooth. There problem was that they didnt have all the apps for the platform that was on IOS and Android. As 3rd platform it was good and would be good even now. If they only would make them now.
Also HMD at first had backing to release like 5-6 different models in there first year that were some what ok but then with there next generation the price was already too high and phones were trash too and no flagship model from them.
You cant blame they dont have money for marketing or what ever.
Chinese brands start up also dont have any brand fame or anything but take Xiaomi as an example they started by giving cheap phones to market with good specs and fast built up to where they are now making cars and so on. They basically started something 2010 with there brand. HMD with Nokia branding already had loyal customer base to take advantage but they think they are Samsung or Apple that can purely live off from brand name alone

Well end of an era and for the company. The reason they sold ok was the Nokia brand and now that they drop the Nokia brand i have minus 100% interest on their devices. It dropped about 100% after they dropped the nokia 8 flagship line entirely.

The first few runs of neo-Nokia (up to 9 PureView probably) were fun despite what the old fellas cope loudly about, I remember drooling over the 8 for example. But since then it's been a downfall. Good riddance and a shame.

Good. Least HMD will now stop tarnishing Nokia's legacy, history and reputation.
HMD devices are some of the most overpriced trash I've ever used, glossed over with Nokia branding. HMD use cheap parts, sloppy buggy glitchy software, basic ODM designs, and fail to keep their promise of "regular" software updates.
I can see HMD going out of business soon. And the sooner the better.

People don't seem to understand all things. It wasn't Nokia that abandoned Symbian. New versions/updates were ready - after Belle there were already two, Elop deleted them and didn't even release them. It was Elop who decided and left the people which made them angry with Nokia.
It wasn't Nokia that wanted Windows Phone. Other companies, e.g. Samsung and HTC had phones with Android and as a test with WP.
People, Nokia fans since they canceled Symbian and MeeGo they demanded a Nokia phone with Android.
But how could someone who worked for Microsoft do this? Stephen Elop came from Microsoft - he didn't choose Android on purpose he chose WP because it was the system of his previous employer.
At that time the system was underdeveloped and unfinished. Even stupid things like volume change for ringtones and multimedia.
A system without many applications, a closed system with many limitations, worse then iOS.
People abandoning Symbian, suddenly deleting MeeGo, switching to the unfinished WP - this caused huge drops in Nokia's stock and valuation exchange.
After that, Microsoft continued to develop the system too slowly, very slowly. WP needed time, but Nokia paid for it almost with her life.
Nokia is not HMD - these two companies cannot be equated. Due to Elop and the then management, the market lost the innovative manufacturer Nokia. But also Symbian/MeeGo. Today, 100% of the mobile OS market is up of two systems: iOS and Android. People in Finland, including Nokia employees, protested against S. Elop, against Microsoft and their plans, many people lost their jobs.

Hmd need to release some good specced value for money models. Having a 695 as your best chipset on offer isn't very up to date. I can see them operating with a stock android, sub pixel experience. Their biggest competition will be Moto I think. But if their update policy is better than Moto and they make sustainable phones where you can replace batteries, then it might pursuade buyers.

Not really surprising when you know the last good Nokia smartphone made by HMD was the Nokia 8.3 5G released in 2020.
2020.
They spent almost 4 years making overpriced mediocre to just plain bad phones.
Now without the Nokia name HMD is just going to keep making overpriced mediocre to bad phones but they'll end up selling way less. Unless they clean up their act which I doubt they will.

AnonD-1137263, 01 Feb 2024What is not from china ? 🤷♂️
If all those west naive ha... moreChinese products are fine, more than great, I actually prefer them over Samsung and Apple phones, but only if it's a chinese brand making their phones in China, HMD's Nokia wasn't that and what they were doing was simply lazy, and it wasn't even always like that, that was their own conscious decision to start rebranding cheap stuff coming from random chinese companies.
I may not like non-chinese brands making their products in China, but that wasn't even the biggest issue with HMD's Nokia branded devices, the problem was them not doing anything, but rebranding generic phones and pricing them way higher than what they were worth just because of the brand name.
HMD wasn't all bad, but they changed down the line to become generic, and not interesting at all. I remember the Nokia 8, which was awesome, Nokia 8 Sirocco was even more impressive, I actually still own one, Nokia 9 PureView is a cool device as well, I have one of those too.. their lower-end number series was good as well, not the best value, but they always had great build quality. C series was always pathetic, while the earlier G and X series were good, but then they became generic too. XR series was interesting, but not good enough and still too expensive, while X30 stood out but it wasn't enough. All these coupled with confusing naming, like how the X100 is significantly worse than the X30 and was launched a year prior to it, G300 was a smaller G50 with a worse main camera and less RAM, it all started to not make any sense and then not make any sense to buy any of them, and that has now led to this point where we are right now.

OTTO, 31 Jan 2024Employment Stephen Elop was biggest mistake, then selecting... moreNO both nokia and microsoft messed up stubborn forcing some windows mobile OS into their phones which was bad call ... They supposed to migrate to android STRAIGHT AWAY in 2008 when firs android phones started emerge...
IF nokia would have nice same looking phone as android because everyone was going crazy to rush buy iphones 2007 .. So still many people in the world didn't want iphone but android which was basically on same principal.. touch screen..
But nokia stupidly were making their weird phones and still with buttons which nobody wanted when iphone and android released.. That's why HTC or LG or Samsung became popular ... Even blackberry made mistake still keeping their tiny keyboard physical buttons which were awkward to press so they lost too...
