And why is seemingly everyone forgetting that the iPhone 4/4s used stainless steel in 2010 and 2011 and sold in millions? Way before the LG V10 and with way more sales. You all have the memory of a goldfish? Or is it because you were not born back then?

What baffles me the most is that soda cans made from aluminum are disposable but a plastic frame instead of aluminum is used as a cost saving measure on phones up to $500 and sometimes beyond. I get that a plastic back has advantages to a glass back like weight or shatter resistance, but I really don’t see any advantage to a plastic frame instead of aluminum apart from a few grams of weight (much less difference than between the plastic/glass back) and the manufacturer saving a few cents.

Can phone companies pls, pleasee switch to other materials like, metals, vegan leather, plastic, carbon fibre, ballistic nylon, etc or whatever, anything but the same old glass sandwich design that we're having since 300 BC, because it's getting way too old and ridiculously boring already

As a case user, I'd like the lightest materials possible. If I didn't use a case, I'd prefer something that doesn't snap.
The aluminum frame on the Xperia XA2 was beautiful with it's almost bezel less side. I'd like more of that, since it's really comfortable and it reminds me of the iPod Nano design with it's flattened cylindrical or "loop" design. Loved that and unlike the current iPhone and Samsung with flat sides, this fixes the problem that curved displays "fixed" with the frame to glass gap smoothness.
Alternatively, something like the Xperia Pro-I with it's textured and beveled aluminum or the first Xperia Pro with it's plasic build that feels like camera equipment. The Xperia Pro lineup feels like durable phones that don't need a case.

Magnesium is the best like the Surface Pro used to be made from. Just as strong as Aluminium, 50% lighter than Titanium.

For me, it would be good if there was an all-around aluminium or titanium design, as the phone wouldn,t shatter from the back. Also, plastic-metal compounds is a good thing to consider.

Stainless steel is the best, more ductile from both aluminium and titanium, also cheap enough. I don't care about heavy phone, it's just feels more sturdy

Mi 14 ultra has one version with titanium.
Rest is aluminum.
Titanium edition is 8000 yuans ($1112).

Where magnesium alloy? Lenovo used this long ago on Lenovo X2. It feels great on hand and light too.

The best is aluminium, my redmi 4x still going strong, only downside is aluminium conducts electricity.hello unwarranted shocks.
Next best is plastic, but of good quality not the cheap scratchy one.

Anonymous, 12 Feb 2024The problem with plastic is the same as aluminium, softness... moreDid you forget about the Lumias of the last decade. Well, those we made up of plastic and I mean not cheap plastic that every one is talking about here. Nokia Lumia devices were built very well and none at the time complained about being plastic. Even Apple supposedly cited Nokia's design originality at the court over legal proceeding against Samsung.
And the plastic used in phones does not crack, only hard acrylic cracks. Metals are inherently bad design for mobile devices and it is a simple case of form over function. Plastic on the other hand is softer and less brittle therefore no dents and cracks however, scratches are inevitable.

I prefer plastic. It can be made beautiful and sturdy. Also it is penetrable by radiowaves, which is important for Bluetooth, WiFi, 5G.
If only phone manufactures knew how to paint plastic in such a way that the paint would not come off... Toys are made of colored plastic, but premium plastic phones used to be almost always painted. The paint came off, and the phone looks really ugly.
