We asked Samsung why it gave its flagships 7 years of support

29 March 2024
The maker believes the added value is worth the overhead.

Any flagship within the last 5 years are actually still usable for the typical smartphone tasks today, barring any bugs. Contrary to the YouTubers, most people don't buy phones only to play Genshin at the highest fps.

Im not surprised. My LG V30+ is a 2017 flagship and I'm texting from it at this moment and it's still going strong and out off all my apps i lost the support of only 1 app. The moral here is always buy flagships to future proof yourself.

i'm still using an Ericsson T10 and i must say it still doesn't lag. will see next year if it still works ok

I'm still Rockin' the A5 2014 for Daily Calls, the S8+ for Daily Driver, Social Media and Navigation and the S10+ Performance Edition for E-Commerce and Mobile Banking. They All work well for their intended purposes aside the Battery Factor. The S10+ is due for Replacement this April and Samsung still has spares in stock but not so for the S8+ and A5-2014. Basically just use it till it dies (not going to replace at local vendors for fear of damaging the body).
The S10+ had it's last security update on March 2023 and now stuck on Android 12 OneUI 4.1. As long as this fella still cand handle it's purpose, no need to replace anything since addtional power support can be had from Powerbanks.
I Also have an A33 which to this day I have never enjoyed the 5G connectivity because of location-related issues (5G not broadly covered)
5 years is plentiful and there is always the "get bored" factor in play for most users (at least in my country), heck I used to change phones every year once the warranty ran out

Replacing the battery means taking the phone apart, indirectly the IP rating on the phone has been lost, making the phone unreliable. One of the reasons why I don't buy old phones.
I don't know what the charge cycle is on a Samsung phone, it's probably still below standard. Apple just said the iPhone 15 has 1000.. still far even from budget Chinese phones.

As per my experience since 2012 any one android version can be used for most of the daily tasks till next 2 to 3 year without any major problem.
Can be used till 5 years but some apps might not get latest updates.
                        After 5 years just luck.
That's for only any 1 android version.

Market can't buy small phones because they simply don't exist. The small phones that do exist are priced so high that average consumer can't buy them. Only budget phones have large screens. "Samsung's research concluded that people tend to keep their phones for longer lately and it makes sense that manufacturers extend the software support."

They should have researched WHY people are doing that.
Could it be because their offerings are no longer attractive?
'cause I know plenty of people - myself included - who went from buying a new phone every year to not buying new phones at all for years and years BECAUSE the new phones offer them LESS than what their previous phone did.

I was forced by a conveniently final sh**ty Samsung update to replace my S10e with an S23.
I LOATHE this phone. It's enormous and does LESS than the S10e. And the lack of features constantly gets in my way. Had Samsung not butchered the battery of my S10e, I would have NEVER bought the S23.
And I WILL ditch it ASAP. Even though it gets more years of updates. 'cause what keeps people longer with phones is how happy they are with them. And I for sure am not happy with this one.

3 years update is enough for me
Because after that my phone looks obsolete
Historically max 4 years I change my phone

My first premium phone, and the one I'm still using at the moment, is the vivo x50 pro. This was released in June 2020 and in June 2023 I received the latest security and software update. Even though my cell phone is 100% new in terms of aesthetics and fluidity, it has remained frozen in time. I have no interest in replacing it, but the lack of updating will make it obsolete.
