We asked Samsung why it gave its flagships 7 years of support

The maker believes the added value is worth the overhead.

skoda9635, 29 Mar 2024I am sorry, but Androids still aren't there yet to hav... moreYou're judging Android based on budget processors. Tensor and Exynos are not nearly as good as Snapdragon 8 and MediaTek Dimensity series. Flagships with those processors run smooth for many years.

I am sorry, but Androids still aren't there yet to have more than two years of support from the HW.

My two and half years old Pixel 6 Pro stars to lag on input after typing like two longer paragraphs of text, or if I open more apps at once.

So OnePlus people are right. Samsung also wants to stop the depreciation of their phones. I had A53 until recently too, it was already lagging from day one, so what support for 5 years for A55? That OneUI thing is crap.

Lilian, 29 Mar 2024Too late in my case. I switched myself and my family to iOS... moreSame reason why I refuse to buy a Xiaomi phones, since they seemingly refuse to updates their products. I don't care if their phones are cheaper, just give me a phone that last long

Long support is nice to have, who here is still using a phone from 2020? I'm sure most of them have upgraded.. Even every year.

More companies should aspire to be like Samsung or Apple with their excellent software updates. Unlike OnePlus's statement, not only long software support beneficial to customers, it also helps them sell more phones since people (like me) are willing to spend more money if it meant I'm gonna have a phone that will last long.

It would've helped a lot to android's reputation as a whole

Too late in my case. I switched myself and my family to iOS years ago, exactly because of this reason, almost non-existent support after ~2 years(they can drag the last Android update to 1 year or over). No plans to switch back really...

Why do phones even have an arbitrary duration of software updates when desktops can just continue updating until the system requirements are no longer met is beyond me.

Anonymous, 29 Mar 2024Why this took so long to big ass companies like samsung and... moreI think it's because phones have hit a performance plateau, so the difference in performance from one year to the next is not significant. Also, phones are getting more and more expensive, so it makes sense that people keep their phones for longer as opposed to upgrading more frequently. Both of these factors would mean that people would want support for those phones for a longer period of time.

Why this took so long to big ass companies like samsung and google? Is too expensive to maintain these devices? I would think not since on the custom ROM side there are phones that have already 7+ years of support, with wayy less budget and people

For years Apple had this 'marketing advantage' that their phones lasted longer so they were a better buy in this regard

No, they just ran out of things to sell on flagships, so they added longer life support even though they know people who buy flagships don't keep them even half that long.

If it were really about longevity they extend it for the S23 lineup to 7 years as well.

dcdev, 29 Mar 2024Because we have to wait 7 years for 1-inch sensor in GalaxyType 1.0 needs to sacrifice design.
Impossible to put it behind 23, 24 or 25mm lens without that massive bump seen on oppo/xiaomi.

Samsung will not do it. Much easier to buy from sony a 1/1.2" exmor T that can give same performance of imx989.

Samsung make great devices, but their software is mediocre.
