18 April 2024
The rotating telescopic lens features an intricate motorized structure which Huawei tested for 300,000 cycles of expansion and contraction.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra can of course do IMX989 with var. aperture and f/1.63 minimum but that means it will use older sensor which is bad for marketing.

But having retractable camera that doesn't do anything like lengthening the focal length for zoom is questionable and being only 22,5mm equivalent, it's a liability because of the moving parts. Not like it save that much space too, since there is a motor and gears as pictured.
Perhaps both the retractable lens and variable aperture share the same single motor, but that's questionable, the camera module inside is actually bigger in this than in Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
                                    Xiaomi 14 Ultra - 23mm equiv - 9.2mm thick
                                    Huawei Pura70 Ultra - 22.5mm equiv - 8.4mm thick
                                    = 0.8mm difference

I was a big fan of Huawei's P-series cameras (still have a P30 around that gives me better shots than the S23...) but their phones overall just got worse.
They're the P70 series they're now all just tablets without any basic functionality besides the camera. Clunky, cumbersome and ugly, with bad software and no basic features. Even the nano-SD slot got axed making the phone even more useless.

At these prices, without basic features and with these ridiculous sizes, there's no reason to buy one over an actual camera anymore for me. Shame.
