Anonymous, 22 Apr 2024Hopefully this isn't another phablet...Hopefully it is. Small phones were interesting before 2012 when a first 6,5 inch phone been released. Small phones are so useless. You cant cram good specs into small phone, you cant give big battery and many else.

Buy Yamaha, Bose, several JBL devices etc. Wired audio can go nuts.

Don't currently plan on buying it but I'm honestly interessed and I hope it is a success because if it's good, I do plan on buying one the day my current phone dies.

Also, you are the one who has been misunderstood it seems. Everything which produces analog audio has an amplifier in them. It maybe integrated as a single chip with dac or a discrete stage separate from the dac but on the same package or a completely different device.
But both the dongles I mentioned do have separate amp stages. Ibasso have dual RT6863 chips which is a discrete amp stage on top of cs43131. e1da 9038s have a separate AD8397 amp stage because ess9038 is a single dac chip without any integrated opamp.
And then. regarding Schiit Modi, it is just a DAC. You would need something like magni or vali to actually connect your headphones.

an analogy for that is like oled vs lcd, you get true black with oled and the contrast is great no matter how much brightness you put into it. compared to lcd's if you add brightness the black will also be brighter. that's dynamic range and clipping

I am not talking about very high end audio. While dacs have been good enough for what our ears can decipher for a lot of time, the fidelity and resolution is actually lost on the amplification stage. I am not recommending dedicated amps, but just something with a well implemented amp section. That is also why a lot of cheap dongles/dacs with new chips fail miserably when compared to couple generations older dac chips paired with a very good amplification stage.

"Quad DAC" actually refers to the use of four DAC channels within a single DAC chip. It doesn't actually have 4 separate 9218s in them. Also, 9218s is a system in chip with amplifier built in to it. While it is alright, a separate amplifier stage will it blow away.
I had the V20 and it is not even in the same ball park. It was way better than other phones, but a dedicated device without the space and power constraints will obviously be better.
