Weekly poll: will you buy a Sony Xperia 1 VI or Xperia 10 VI?

19 May 2024
The 1 VI may look mostly the same, but it mixes up the Xperia formula quite significantly. The 10 VI brings upgrades of its own and a lower price to boot.

Let's not beat around the bush, 1080p at this price is absurd, if people wanna use 1080p, then make it 1440p and put a setting to change the resolution, like almost all other phones. I sometimes do that with my phone (has 450 ppi max), I drop it to fullHD+ to save battery and forget about it, then after I look at the screen something feels a bit off, then I remember I dropped the resolution, so yeah, it counts, even if it's difficult to spot, you pay premium. The cameras are also the same as the last model, the zoom cam is also crap, extremely soft and closes aperture the more you zoom so you always need good light for it. This isn't a bad phone, far from it. But come on, this is a 1000€ phone max

If Xperia 1 VI had actual walkman hardware for music playback at $1000, with the rest of specs unchanged, I'd consider it. As it is, way too expensive. Maybe at $750.

Anonymous, 19 May 2024I did and yes, it does differ even from an arm's length. You misread the "blind test". The whole point is that you don't know what to expect. The same way most self-proclaimed wine connoisseurs wouldn't be able to tell which wine is the more expensive when they can't see the label - apply this analogy to knowing which screen is which.

I'd love to do a blind test where people need to discern 1080p from 1440p at arm's length. Most of these QHD aficionados that "absolutely require" 1440p screen would learn that their sense of sight is more related to paper stats than actual real-world experience.

I would absolutely love to get it, but there's not going to be a US release with all the bands (or all the important ones at least) for T-Mobile. I'll have to go for xiaomi 14 or a pixel 9 pro when it's released, provided the battery isn't too bad this time around.

The display is now not power hungry and the old aspect ratio didn't work for everyone. I was hoping to buy a VI but, after waiting for months, now I find out that they aren't even selling v them in the US. I'm very disappointed! I don't want another Samsung and, I certainly don't want an apple.

Let's ask this in the point of view of someone with a previous Xperia 1 model that's looking to upgrade.

Notable differences comparing the 1 VI to the 1 III (2021)
                                      PROS
                                      – Improved chipset
                                      – Improved cameras
                                      – Slightly better battery life

                                      CONS
                                      – Resolution decreased from 1644p down to 1080p
                                      – Aspect ratio changed from 21:9 to 19.5:9 which means wide screen movies can no longer be played at their native resolution due to cropping or empty space.
                                      – Removal of notification LED
                                      – Removal of ToF sensor
                                      – Removal of physical GA button (could be modified as a shortcut button)

The Xperia 1 VI offers practically no reason to upgrade towards for someone who already owns a recent model. Not to mention it has a higher launch price. Sony's mobile sales will continually drop with these awful downgrades that they have been implementing annually.

I would consider the 1 VI if it was minimum 16GB/512GB with at least 450ppi but for €1000 max.
