1. Saying that the US can not eliminate dependence on China because of manufacturing costs is flying against reality in which there is already undergoing huge effort to move supply chains out, to India, Vietnam (which is kinda funny since it has the same system as China), Thailand, Philippines and everywhere else possible. This is very complicated process but there is steel resolve by the US to push China out. There is also starting process of creating 'technodemocracies' camp against 'technoautoritharinism'. Once these things are implemented you may see e.g. Chinese made phones eliminated in similar way like Huawei was eliminated from networks.
2. It is true mastering semiconductor technology is exquisitely difficult. But Chinese are known from long-term methodical approach to mastering things. Example of their progress are home grown lithography machines for the 27nm node. Now you can say 27nm is Stone Age technology fact is it the bulk technology for industrial applications. There is another example of complexity similar to semiconductors albeit of different nature: passenger aircraft. After colossal long term effort the C919 medium range plane made in China is flying. It is still using western engines but work on home grown ones is in the advanced stage. The long distance plane C929 is in the advanced development stage. Conclusion is that there are not things Chinese won't be able to do.

You don't wake up one morning having mature cutting edge chip technology. There are milestones others took decades ago and the process is evolutionary. No matter how industrious and goal oriented China is they will never catch up with the existing technology. Like someone else mentioned there might be a breakthrough in another type of technology where China leads the way. These huge investments in chip tech were mainly sunken before mostly because of corruption. There were literally hundreds of hollow startups applying for subsidies. Let's make it clear China needs self sufficiency they don't need competitiveness. Older, less powerful chips are perfectly fine with their needs.

Both sides of this discussion are wrong:
- China can definitely catch up in semiconductors and not by spying but its own r&d. Look at 5G, electric vehicles - especially batteries, and even billions of small clever gadgets on Ali and Temu. Strong competition, inventive spirits, money is there and this is enough for brisk progress. In this respect China is only beginning its rise.
- But this does not mean China will overcome and dominate whatever technology as US will never give up its supremacy and domination. Think what would theoretically happen if China developed new semiconductor technology beating existing ones (and they have staggering research in this area). They would be simply pushed out from the US-sphere markets under the guise of national security, stolen research, backdoor traps, undemocratic technology, using forced/child labor, etc. In fact a major strike to isolate China out of high-tech markets is only coming, strategic vision is that there will be China-world and US-world. Remember, US will never give up.

China overcomed a lot.
The fastest probably to overcome many hardships.
Comparing it USA and EUROPE is just not worth the time.
CHINA is highly efficient in many aspects.
I went many times in china and found that their infra is very good mainly in or near city level areas.
Rural areas are also okay but some rural areas are still not okay i found.
Hopefully they will improve those parts in future.
The world needs to learn how they changed themselves within such short amount of time.
Yes we can criticize them but that not the best option all time.
Hopefully they keep the same pace of improvement in future also.
