JimmyTheGreatest, 27 May 2024What's the difference...Internally, the US absolutely doesn't consider Taiwan as China's territory, and would officially recognise its independence if China were to announce an invasion or directly attack a Western nation. They're only not recognising its independence in official terms so as not to piss China off into declaring either war or a trade war. I personally find America's approach to be too soft, but it is what it is, and my opinion here is irrelevant to what is being done.

Darth Caesium, 27 May 2024Strawman argument. America and China have spent similar amo... moreOf course America is afraid of China. China will eclipse them as a superpower sooner or later. They're also on their way to technological superiority. The sanctions placed upon China's top tech companies were to hamper and stall their growth. But China will get there eventually. All the US is doing is stifling competition and provoking conflict. TMSC were happily supplying China with chips and ASML were happily supplying China with chip making equipment before the US interfered. And no, Taiwan is not going to be invaded. It wasn't invaded when the DPP were in power. Now that the pro-China parties are in control of the legislature and the only reason there is a DPP president is because the 2 pro-China candidates split more than 60% of the votes, there is even less of a reason for China to invade Taiwan.

les gooo, I hope this goes into actually good chips and not just stealing american patented ideas and then selling it in China only. I hope they make original stuff they can sell worldwide, that would be great for competition, like in the GPU space with NVIDIA, in the CPU space with Apple, Intel and AMD and in the SoC space with ARM and Apple.

If not, then I hope they at least make worthwhile changes to the formula so that it'd be worth choosing a chip made by them over an established brand like better battery life or stability, those are going to be great.

America and China have spent similar amounts in subsidies to prop up key semiconductor players. I don't disagree that America is afraid of China, but not in terms of how far Chinese chips will get, but rather in terms of what would happen to advanced chip production if China were to invade Taiwan tomorrow. The two countries are spending their money on the semiconductor industry for entirely different reasons.

                                😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Throwing more money at the problem is only going to marginally improve China's semiconductors industry, because the main problem isn't a lack of funds, it's the lack of access to ASML's EUV machines, and that won't change when there's so many proprietary components from so many different companies, including Zeiss' lenses. These things are so closely guarded that it will be close to impossible for China to steal and reverse engineer them. It's the kind of stuff that spies get captured and killed over. Without EUV, they can only theoretically go for 5nm DUV, and that will have such bad yield and defect issues that the Chinese government is trying to have as many fabs opened as possible to alleviate this problem as much as possible. This kind of spending honestly shows how dire their situation is, even if they're much better off right now than many people expected, since the longer time passes, the more behind they'll get.

Good for them, pretty sure they'll get there rather soon.
