Qualcomm quietly unveils the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chipset

08 June 2024
It appears to be similar to the Snapdragon 695 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 and not a successor to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1.

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2024Ah yes, phone oems putting this instead of dimensity 7000 s... moreX51 is 3gpp r15, dimensity 6000 series is 3gpp 16 and has higher peak down/uplink in sub-6. mmWave raises bom in budget range unnecessiraly.

This whole lineup is terrible in general. Qualcomm should get rid of the "+" and "s" designators, they don't need this many chips per generation. They should be making the 7 Gen 3 as fast as the 8s Gen 3, the 6 Gen 3 as fast as the Dimensity 7200, and the 4 Gen 3 as fast as the 778G; and all of this should be on TSMC N4 (which is actually cheaper to make than TSMC N5, despite being an improved version of it).

RaviSS, 08 Jun 2024The chip is decent enough on its own for budget smartphones... moreWell 4 Gen 1 is pretty much same like SD695 as the 4 gen 2 was already a downgrade.
It's so weird with the qualcomm that they make new generations but make them worse then previous. Like naming a chip as generation and then dont make new generations better like it be a logical to think that new generations would be advancing to the future and not going backwards. 4 gen 1 have like adreno 619 and the 4 gen 2 and 3 with 613

Never mind that there are not a lot of devices that have SD4 series anymore so their 6 series is basically 4 now that is the budget bottom class

1080p60 is fine with me, what was painful with the 695 was how most phones using it topped out at 1080p30. If the phones using these will be cheaper than those using 695, then I don’t see a problem. 6nm TSMC is a good node, same for the core configuration, and UFS storage is there as well. The 4G model may have the potential to bring budget phones into the modern era, leaving eMMC and A75 behind. Of course, that all depends on the price. In fact, these chips seem like good candidates for a hypothetical Galaxy A16 4G/5G duo. But Samsung doesn’t really use Snapdragon in A series. And if they continue trickling down the Exynos 1280 one step a year, then that could land in A16 and have 4K video (but no 1080p60 it seems, which has been my preferred video resolution since 2016).

Anonymous, 08 Jun 2024While mediatek not even 1% share among phones above $600That'll change when qualcomm gets into exynos 990 (lackluster architecture) situation or snapdragon 821 situation (using too much die space) or both

Qualcomm doesn't have good budget soc. They are losing market share every year.

If every phone that's getting a SD 680-685 and low end Mediatek crap is getting this, then it is halfway decent.
But still, it is just a 695/4G1 rebrand. A way older 720G or 732G still has more features (better ISP, 4K video support)...

RaviSS, 08 Jun 2024The chip is decent enough on its own for budget smartphones... moreTotally agreed, 4 gen 3 should've been the name of it, my take on this is that they probably thought they can trick people into thinking this one is superior by simply being a 6 rather than a 4. There's no real reason to use the "s" and "+" variants on these chipsets when you can simply use a lower or higher SD number depending on the performance (8sGen3 should've been called 7Gen3 for example, because its performance is lower than 8Gen2 even), and be less confusing for everyone.

Qualcomm's product segmentation may slowly get to Intel levels.

The chip is decent enough on its own for budget smartphones, but the issue is the naming scheme. No way it deserves to be a 6 series chip in 2024. It is just an overclock of 4 gen 1 and should have been named 4 gen 3.

DarlingYext, 08 Jun 2024Is Qualcomm trying to be Xiaomi with their naming? Where is... moreGen = launch time

                              Gen 3: Q4 2023 -> Q3 2024
                              ...

                                So its basically just 695+
Much worse than the 6G1 obviously but qualcomm naming sense has become stupid Id say
No matter how much a stepdown a newer gen should be better not just a rebrand plus version of old chip, much like the 8sG3 where even if its lesser variant it still holds its ground against the 8G2
But looking at the 7sG2 which is just a variant of the 6G1 then this 6sG3 as a 695+ rebranded looks like QC chips s variant that is not the 8 series are a disaster
